Another dashboard rattle thread - any suggestions?

Hi folks,
I know there's been a million and one threads about dashboard rattles, but I figured one of you might have had the same problem as me. Obviously it was stupid for me to assume that going from a Hyundai to a newer, lower mileage BMW, build quality might actually be decent!

Anyway, the rattle is somewhere on the passenger side, im 99% sure it's inside the dashboard. It's a plastic-y rattle, almost like a clicking noise. It happens over bumps, but even slightly rough roads make it click constantly. It's annoying because it's high pitched and cuts through the radio no matter how loud it is, plus I don't want to be driving round with the radio on full volume all the time.

I've had the whole glove box assembly out, passenger cup holder, central air vents, stereo - no luck. Any ideas at all what it might be? It's doing my nut in and making me hate every journey I go on! :headbang:

Hi
Have you checked the Strut Braces where they bolt onto the bulkhead ? Mine worked loose after about 18months of ownership. worth a look.

Yep, had them off to sort the wipers the other day and made sure they were done up tight when I put them back on. Unless my ears are deceiving me, it definitely sounds inside the dashboard, not the other side of the bulkhead, at least I think :|

Hi,

Try the trim above the sun visors. Unscrew each sun visor (one screw each end), prise out the interior lighting unit (thin screwdriver or plastic trim tool), then slowly pull to remove (the A pillar trims will probably pop off or come loose). Add some sound deadening material and re-assemble.

This worked for me and I was adamant the noise was coming from the drivers cup holder area!!

Hope this helps.

Had a insanely annoying rattle in my zed for the past year which sounded like it was coming from inside the dash! So following suggestions from the guys here i slowly over time practically dismantled my dash until there was nothing else i could do. The A pillars/ sun visor area are all sound foamed up and are completely solid now, no movement or sound coming from the whole area. Inside the dash is all solid also with foam stuffed between the air flow piping wherever it touched any thing

I thought by eliminating all exterior parts of the dash would kill it by removing all air vents radio etc. and drive without them in! BUT NO, THE PERSISTENT BLOODY RATTLE WAS STILL THERE! :x

I was considering selling the zed because instead of it being "THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE" it was ULTIMATELY DRIVING ME INSANE!

So eventually i found it. It was the cover that sits above my feet which surrounds the clutch and brake peddles. It was tapping against the center consul where it kind of finishes off next to the fire wall!! A previous owner had removed it and not replaced it properly :o

To remove the cover there are 3 phillips screws holding it in place, they are situated nearest to you as you look into the foot well.

Now my zed is quiet and rattle free

Hope this helps any one who is suffering like i did for over a year.

Cheers, tug
