Another cracked wheel

Had a 296 wheel checked and its under 2mm so dealer is talking to BMW and we will see what happens.....

thats two new wheels on the back so Ill need to wait and see what happens. no more cracks hopefully.

Had a reply from BMW..........no sorry can't help.

I have just spoken to customer services and it seems that the 2mm run-out is the allowance on certain types of wheels only. i.e. those that are prone to cracking. All other wheels are 0.2 mm. Hence no dosh. So after 24 years driving BMW's this will be my last one. It's not the money, it's the principle that's involved, even a 50:50 would have been a nice jesture. I did get a jesture, just not the one I would have liked. The Mrs was going to trade in her Tiguan for an X3 at the end of the year as well, so I guess it has cost them more than it has cost me.

I think more folk should vote with their feet!

It would be good to see the inspection reports for the wheels at manufacture. I also wonder if the runout is localised ? Ie at the area of suggested impact.

Do other car manufacturers wheels suffer like this I wonder?
 
Worrying thread. I am still considering a brand new 35i with 296 wheels, 19".

I will be removing the RFT's from the first day we have it. What is the 2mm rule all about?

I had a crack in the summer, dealer said it was within their limitations but that the damaged wheel had damaged the tyre too and that needed replacing at £390. My argument that they should pay for the tyre too didn't go down well so I phoned BMW customer services who said I'm lucky the dealer was paying for the wheel because they wouldn't have!

Apparently BMW do a tyre and wheel insurance policy... kind of says it all about the sorry state of their wheels with run flats really. I'm going to enquire about it but has anyone here tried it?
 
This is very poor form from BMW, you would think that ANY crack regardless of size would be replaced. If you bought double glazing or had a house extension which cracked you wouldn't be expected to accept and live with it!

It will probably have a raft of wriggle clauses in the policy!

We've had two cracked 326Ms. BMW response is they will do nothing. Clearly they're quite happy to sell new 326Ms at full price - thereby profiting from the problems.

Currently have two BMWs in the household. We'll never buy BMW again. As you say - its the principle.
 
Sorry didnt update - got word back wheel within the measurement after dealer checked it - BMW wasnt interested... not at all. Wasnt happy but what can you do ? not a lot of options at all. My first BMW and love it however the customer care side of things is sadly not up to the standard that you should expect from BMW. Its a known issue - wheels are cracking and its not just me. there are tons of info on the net about the wheels. funny how they know about this and yet choose to ignore and not do a recall or otherwise deal with a potentially dangerous situation.
 
Its not an issue limited to just BMW.. Audi, Merc etc all have models with 19"+ wheel issues. They look great but they're just not up to crappy UK roads.
 
Sorry Maniac I disagree, I think this is more linked to BMW and run-flats and E89 and 3 series cars.

I have had 22'' wheels on my RRS, and 18 wheels on my TT, A4 and A5's, and 19 wheels on both my 6 series, and no issues at all.
 
I think BMW are dodging the column on this issue.
I can't remember seeing any posts re after market 19's failing !
 
I've just had another 19" type 296 go. This time though I don't blame either the wheel or BMW as there was a terrible pothole near Clacketts Lane clockwise on the M25. £379 plus vat to replace it and hopefully insurance will cover the tyre. Now to claim against the Highways Agency.

Coopers Croydon took it in without notice on friday afternoon and it had been checked over by 8am this morning. now waiting for the wheel to be delivered so I can collect it. Pretty good service from them I thought.

Your singular personal experience aside, the internet is replete with cracking wheel issues. BMW get highlighted but there are plenty of other marques with issues. AMG C63 comes to mind.
