Another case of a cracked 296

Hey all,

Just thought Id share my horrific tyre with you all! I filled up with air on Monday night and set off to Huddersfield from London.

About 10mins into my journey, the tyre warning came up. I thought nothing of it as I had topped up the air less than an hour before.

Long story short, the rear starting swinging from left to right like a salsa dancer! I made it 13miles to the next services on the m1 and found that my tyre had totally blown out. You could fit a head in it!

Went to my local garage today to get a new tyre, they told me the wheel was "finished" as it had 5 cracks in it. He blamed it on runflats. Told me to get rid of them as soon as I can.

Aaaaaaaanyway! Here is my predicament...what do you guys think about getting the wheel fixed? I can't seem to see any cheap ones on ebay..

Or do you think its worth buying a set of totally different ones? TBH, I really really like the look of it, but I can't keep paying for new tyres and crack repairs!

PS here is what was left of my tyre :/ :( :( :(

The long term view is to replace them and ditch the run flats.....but then again I never listen and I keep taking my wheels back for warranty repairs......and I know they won't listen to my moans forever.....so yes if I was without warranty, I would ditch the runflats......but I do worry about how the car would drive differently.....who knows

My experience of new wheel and normal tyres is that it makes the car driver better and is more
Comfortable. The only issue is increased risk of being stranded IF you have a flat, something I can live with.

I have a spare rear 296 if you want to make an offer?

Put decent tires on it NOT rft's, and it improves everything, the ride, the handling. It even makes 296's last longer. A mobility kit is far easier to get along with than crappy runflats and cracked wheels.

I've found runflats fine on all BMWs I've owned, never had any issues.

It's a shame BMW allowed the problem of wheels cracking in the first place as it just gives runflats and undeserved bad press.

I wonder what would have happened with the same blow out on a normal tyre. Far better to have a damaged wheel than lose control of the car.

Just my take on it :)

Tim.

I had one go like that on a Passat some years ago, normal not RFT. Had to put on mini spare and limp back to the nearest town. It was a rear so no steering issues and just couldn't feel any accelleration and heard a weird noise , no TPM 's back then :(

also had a hole the size my fist appear in a rear on my M3, tpm's alerted me and it was no issue, other than waiting 4 hours for a tow to Spokane and then $1400 for two new tires and a hotel room.

RFT's - No way
Normal tires - the only way

JMHO

Been to a few places today..all have said its not worth a repair and ALL have encouraged me to ditch the Runflats!!!

Anyone have a spare 296 by any chance :( :?

maniac said he has one and make him an offer

Yep I bought a spare rear for safety in case one went but then I swapped into the 313s. 296 wise I have a set of 5 (3 rears and 2 fronts) plus part worn Pirelli p Zeros stacked up in the garage.

Maniac, not sure if I'm being daft, but my message is still in the outbox when I'm pretty sure it should have moved to the sent box by now!!

Hi, this is a bit awkward.

Ive only just seen your message. Another forum member has already made an offer on that wheel in the short time between your original post and your next post a day later where you expressed interest, let me check with the other buyer they still want to go ahead and I'll update you.
