3.0l in Horley this weekend usual smoke from oil leaking onto exhaust. Old main and plug well gaskets were the worst I have seen and I have done a few now. Gaskets totally hardened and brittle took ages to chip them out of the cover, replaced with Elring set which includes the 15 round rubber seals for the cover bolts, always have good results with Elring brand. Blue Hylomar sealant applied on half moon shapes front and rear where gasket changes direction as per BMW TIS instructions. Also applied some in spots around the circumference of the cover to ensure the gasket stayed in place when the cover was turned over to fit it. It just needs a bit to hold it in the recess in the cover so it doesn't drop out when turned over. New spark plugs put in whilst in there and an oil and filter change. Had noted there was a cavitation noise from the filter housing and found the old filter was rock hard, bit of sludge between the pleats so looks like it had been changed for a long time. All buttoned up and 5w40 oil in it it started fine and cavitation noise gone. Had to reuse the filter stem O rings new filter only came with the cap O ring so if you are doing an oil change ensure you get a filter that includes the two small O rings
