Another Brighter Bulb Question

Hi all,

I have searched the forum a bit and found most people upgrade their standard halogen headlights to use either Osram Nightbreaker bulbs or Philips Diamond Vision 5000. I did however read, the Diamond Vision weren't legal, so i thought i'd ask my community who obviously have a lot of people using them to see if this is true??

Also, am i correct in saying i need H7 bulbs, as i read somewhere that it should be H1. As i believe, this is just the shape, but if someone could confirm for me, that would be great.

Cheers

Neil

You need H7 bulbs. I use Osrams and thy are ok - better than standard. Can't comment on the Philips as I have never looked at them. Should tell you on the website if they are legal / illegal for road use though.

Blurb taken from Auto bulbs direct,

•High performance halogen without high power consumption for safe installation in headlamps.
•Replicate the Xenon HID look with Philips Diamond Vision bulbs.
•5000K - Ultimate White Light
•12v, 55w
•Direct replacement for standard halogen bulbs.
•UV protected so suitbale for use in plastic lenses.
•Made of quartz glass for superb quality.
•Quality original equipment (OE)
Please note, these bulbs are not E marked so therefore not strictly road legal

I recently upgraded to Philips extreme vision and have been pleased with results.

Light is definitely whiter and reached further. Next step is to recondition the headlights using the 3M kit (just purchased from ebay for £19). Will update relevant thread with result when i've done that.

I love this - it means 'they are not legal for road use and we need to cover our arses, but we don't want to discourage you from spending your money as you obviously want to'

TBH, as long as they are well adjusted you probably won't get pulled for them... But you may fail an MOT, and if you get pulled for something else then the rozzers ay well pick up on them on their walk-around looking for other issues.

I use these...

They are both excellent and legal!

For what it worth many years back (when i was 17) I had 100w 9005 bulbs (similar to H7/H1) in the low beam, and you might think they would be crazy bright but I would say they are probably 30% brighter, I went though a heap of different style bulbs like described above that claim brighter/whiter light as the E36 had terrible dark lighting as stock. These did the trick more than anything costing several times more I think I paid about 7 quid on ebay for them. The wiring did not get hot (must be over engineered anyway) and the relay held up just fine over about 3 years with no glare since the beam pattern was the same just a little brigter. Years later I upgraded to HID 9005 aftermarket kit (this was on a compact E36) that did produce a bit of glare and was 3 times as bright.

If I were back in that situation with just halogen on the Z4 i would do the same, the bulbs did not have 100w written anywhere on them but the packaging did and added to that they were in no way dangerous to oncoming traffic. You would be much more at risk with the law with a aftermarket HID kit. Having said all that I would check the Z4 wiring out against the E36 as they may not be so over engineered any more to include a thicker wire and a decent relay.

Feck, not cheap ! I paid that for four Osram Night Breakers... Though they are not xenon filled.
