annoying rattles

Hi all,

I am on my second E89 Z4, the first a 23 s-drive 2010 owned for 8 years and the second a 35is 2016 bought more recently.
I have had all usual problems associated with the 19' alloys running on run flats over the years, but both cars have suffered from the most annoying rattle from behind the drivers ear (RHD) when ever the roof is down.
It sounds more like rattling glass than anything, however it is still there when the windows are down.
When the roof is up, no problems.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance, Welf

Have you got the driver's seat pushed right back so it's rubbing against the plastic interior behind the seat, I know I did till I realised what was making the noise

Did anyone get to the bottom of this? I have an annoying rattle . Car has been up on ramp and garage reported no visible issues with suspension

Ok just a wild thought. Maybe you can get the car on a dyno so you can run the car with top down and see if can hear and determine the source of the noise? Maybe hard with the noise of car on dyno but just might help? This would also help determine what speed it is present.

I’ve had the car 2 months and it started 3 days ago. All ok before that. Seat is not fully back and wheels haven’t been changed. It’s booked into BMW in 2 weeks time

It's just a thought, but do you have a good BMW Indy anywhere near you as their labour rate is likely to be about half of that of a main agent!

And it's possible they may have more experience with older models.

If you gave an indication of your location someone may have a recommendation.

Kind of tried that twice already…they just say “can’t find the source”…of course, BMW will possibly do the same for twice the price but they might try a bit harder? I may give up and just live with it

That's a shame. :(

I'm lucky as I'm not far away from RBM Hampshire set up by Ross in 2019 after 15 years at Sytner, so he has worked on our cars since they were new.
