The other day I had cause to 'warn another road user of my prescence' and was shocked at the feeble apologetic peep from the horn!

I wasn't expecting a supertanker's foghorn but something a bit more butch is needed. I doubt the prat even heard it. :-x

Has anybody 'upgraded' the horn on a Z4?

You should have a high and low note, there are two horns one on each side behind the bumper ( next to the fog lights). It would be an easy mod, but for the love of god, please no "general lee" !!

I'll give them a check as it didn't sound two-tone.

Generally, car horns are the cheapest bit of cr@p the manufacturer can find. Barely acceptable on a Lada but not on a BMW.

Found some aftermarket ones here.

My horn sounded like this when I got mine. Bought a new low tone horn from eBay actually of an e36 (?) 3 series and worked fine for a while... However it's gone as well now so I need a new one :x

The horns are either side of the bumper behind the fog lights, low on the passenger side and high on the drivers side. You can get to them through the lower hatch in the wheel arch. Turn the wheel out on the side you are working on so you have more space

My Mk5 Golf GTI had amazingly loud horns

What about a pair of these?

Give that Italian vibe to the car :-)

The thing about air horns is that they aren't instant. There's a slight pause while the compressor spools up. The all-in-one 'snail' type are better because the compressor is right next to the horn.

Overall, I think I'll be getting a pair of electric ones - PIAA do some good ones. I might be able to pick up something at the NEC Classic show next month.

I had exactly the same dull pathetic horn sound the first time I had to use it..sounded more metro than BMW! Whilst I had the front bumper off I noticed the wire off the high tone (drivers side). A dab of solder and all working again...proper quality sound

The horn sounds alright when it's working properly. I remember hearing a Ferrari (355, possibly) with the most pathetic little farty squeak of a horn - no doubt from some Fiat mummobile.
