Angel eyes/headlights as welcome lights - possible?

Just wondering if it's possible to programme a pre-facelift E85 so that the headlights/sidelights flash with the interior welcome lights when the car is unlocked. I have aftermarket lights with angel eyes and just wondering how it would look if they came on briefly when the car was unlocked. I'm planning on installing door handle and puddle lights in the next couple of weeks and had considered trying to wire the angel eyes in to the circuit as well but have a sneaking suspicion I would only succeed in breaking something expensive.
 
I wired my angel eyes into the switched power supply, so that they come on as soon as you turn the key 1 click. Making them come on when unlocked should be possible if you wire the AE into the same circuit as the interior lights - but then they will turn off once the interior lights go out...
 
Wire them to both with with some resister / relay / switch thing to ensure they only take power from one at a time?
 
I was wondering if it would be possible to wire them in to the sidelights as they are at the moment but also wire them in to the welcome lights. In principle I'm sure it should be possible but I know it's not as simple as just running some wires from my welcome lights to the angel eyes.

Will need to think about it and try and remember some of my school knowledge on electrical circuits!
 
Have you seen the EAS kit for the E46. I'm not sure how they wire it in but is that the sort of thing you are after. One vid shows them operating and then a vid on install.

Just had a quick look at my ALSZ file via NCSexpert, you need to alter the following to suit your requirement, but try flashing high beam with key off to activate home lights.

Home lights 1 ALSZ HEIMLEUCHTEN home lights activated by flashing high beam with key off
Home lights 2 ALSZ HEIMLEUCHTEN_ABBRUCH home light stop
Home lights 3 ALSZ HEIMLEUCHTEN_AL home lights are low beam
Home lights 4 ALSZ HEIMLEUCHTEN_BL Home lights are turn signals
Home lights 5 ALSZ HEIMLEUCHTEN_FL Home lights are high beams
Home lights 6 ALSZ HEIMLEUCHTEN_KL58G home lights are interior backlighting, cluster, ashtray etc

That's actually quite useful. Rather than home lights though I was wondering about welcome lights when the car is unlocked. Do you know if that is mentioned at all?

It would be good if you could program that only to come on in the dark, but i dont think that would be possible?
 
Without having a well thought out little circuit then I feel that if you have the AE as both sidelights and as welcome lights, then when the sidelights are on current will flow and illuminate the door lights, footwell, puddle, etc. Might do some circuit damage too.

I'd be researching either a relay that cuts off the feed as appropriate, or a diode set up to stop the reverse flow. (I'm an amateur at electronic circuits though, so you'd need someone to scetch out the diode circuit board)
 
I was thinking it would involve a diode on the welcome light and the headlight circuit to prevent reverse current when either was on. Not sure how to overcome the possibility of powering the angel eyes from both circuits at the same time which I imagine wouldn't be good for them either.
 
Just one diode set up to prevent flow to the welcome circuit when the sidelights are 'on' would do it. Powering the AE from 2 circuits that were both active would not matter. (Think of 2 positive feeds from the battery to a single light bulb)

Reason I'm interested is of course I have my own set up of AE's and the welcome lights with door, puddle, etc. activation on open and close.

Simplest of course (if possible) would be to just have the car coded to flash the sidelights that are now AE's on open and close.
 
Well my plan is actually to install puddle/external handle/footwell lights following your how-to. I just thought it would be interesting to take it a step further and try wiring in the AEs. Still waiting on some of the parts arriving from eBay and need to take a wee trip to Maplin for some other bits and pieces. Planning to do this next weekend so will look into the AE circuit in a bit more detail.
 
Did you get this sorted in the end? Want to get my new AE's to come on when I unlock the car.
 
Just be careful as AE are very expensive to replace when they burn out and the more you use them, the quicker that happens. Is about £40 or thereabouts.
