Angel Eyes Experiment

 a strange response...

In short the other thread the guy just gutted the internals via the back hatch - do you wish to expand on what you have done?

Still no clue about how it was done..
AFAIR led rings were placed behind oe glass ri.gs and glow through them
Never had a chance to see a dismantled headlight so I dont know whether it is possible without gutiing the internals, but probably it is :-)

Ask ranski to link to the thread where it's been done before, I never saw that thread, maybe it explains everything.

Whats with the hostility? All he's saying is that someone modified the headlamps without cutting them open. No need to get upset about it.

I can't see how you could get the led ring in place for the inner ring on the headlight without opening the headlight because the inner one has a blue plate clipped on to the back to whiten the light from the yellow sidelight type bulb which usually illuminates it. I sandwiched the led ring between the factory diffuser and blue plate when I did it. I don't have any pics of this part but I should be able to get some tomorrow as I'm opening them back up to replace the outer pair of rings as one of them died :/

Edit: you can just about see the blue plate on the inner ring in the last pic above, even if you could get if over the blue plate, how would you get it there, and secure it in the exact correct position without opening the lights?

Where's the hostility? ranski said there was a post where the AE were done without cutting and I'm asking for a link to the post. Is that being hostile? Sorry if I came off like I was upset, because I'm not.

Interesting... As i have had my headlights out and i could see no way of getting the projectors out without cutting them.

I know you can remove the main projector from the back hatch, there are 4 tiny nuts you need to remove then it pulls out. Can't think how you could remove the dummy projector though. Will investigate tomorrow when I get my lights off if pungo hasn't already enlightened us.

this is an odd thread... what's the big deal in sharing how you have done it? Did I unintentionally steal some of your thunder by saying I recall a previous member having carried out the same?

Just produce the goods on how you achieved this, anxious forum members are waiting. More so that they also wont have to dig out the feared dremel

Agreed, starts a thread about it, but despite many eager requests to elaborate, chooses to ignore them.

I don't think it's difficult to do things from the back. The internals are mounted on 4 threaded bolts. Should be easy enough to strip those down and then rebuild. Alignment of the projector would need thinking about.

When I did my AE conversion 5 years or so ago I was more interested in splitting the lights to get rid of the amber hockey sticks so made no attempt to strip the lights out from the rear.

Keep thinking about swapping my AE from sidelight to DRL's given how things have moved on. Just a bit of wiring to change the function (if I ever get time).

Regardless it's good to see this project and would love to see a post of 'how to' post as opposed to just the result.

only the outer projector is removable so you may be able to do the outer halo but still can't see how you could get to the inner one.

Not sure as I worked on prefacelift lights.
thinking about it the inners are still the same, just with the face lift bi xenon there is a dummy projector covering the inner reflector, the dummy projector is clipped in to the headlight mask.

I've been really busy lately and have not had the time to get back to this mod. I did say this is a "work in progress"; therefore have not even completed it yet. I still have some issues to work out before I'd say the mod is complete. The inside of the headlight is very fragile and easily damaged. I didn't want people damaging their headlights without some critical steps needed to prevent damage to the internal parts. I did say it's "Like arthroscopic surgery with a steady hand". I'll write something up once I have some free time to work out a some issues that are needed to complete the mod. The mod is not trivial. AKAIK, none or very few of the internal parts of the headlight can be purchased separately so if they get damaged, another headlight would be required.

But did you remove all the internals?
And are those leds placed in front or behind oe rings?

TapaTalking
They've got to be behind. I wonder if he's somehow managed to get the factory diffusers out then attach the led rings behind then clip them back in.

And did anyone tried to simply replace oe angel eye bulb for the cree led one?
They are ba9s AFAIR, only sealed in the housing.
Plenty ba9s cree leds on the market right now and i'm wondering if the strongest 5w ones would be sufficent enough to serve as drl's
