Well I wouldn't trust the reviews as it looks like they have exactly the same workshops in South Korea as they do in France!! :rofl:uz4 said:https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003109285475.html?spm=a2g0o.cart.0.0.5efd3c00TDybVL&mp=1
How foolish would it be to take a punt on this unit? Any thoughts?
Yes he is, link here >> https://acarmultimedia.com/product/acarnavi-bmw-z4-e89-android-car-multimedia-and-navigation-touch-screen-head-unit-with-idirve/?fbclid=IwAR2Qcu61WQQypLe9kbaEc0ZOxJ9P6BjW23AWH48fMgsZpkb1-_HJHihpeIouz4 said:Dave: is the supplier you used still trading?

Is it possible to fit an OEM screen (replacing the storage box)
Keeping the none iDrive head unit and cobbling an MMI box into the mix, sending apple carplay to the screen, but relaying all the audio via the existing setup?

Anything is possible![]()
The screen pops up and turns on via a canbus signal to the screen motor that is fed with a 12v supply, this I think would be the problem, because there is nothing to say to the screen that it's time to pop up. Well I'm sure someone could build a little circuit for this.
The other issue here though is the cost of a pop up screen, as they aren't normally cheap, average price was, last time I saw, around the £450+ mark, although they can be bought for less sometimes.
Theoretically though it "should" work, as the box transmits a video signal to the screen, so yes you'd then have CarPlay, and the sound would be fed via the AUX input.
Had my i drive pop up screen changed on warranty a few months back - they are around £2500 new.............. WTFAnubisZed said:Deepseaskateboard said:Another thought popped into my head…

AnubisZed said:Alas not that I'm aware of, its either the OE iDrive controller with the iDrive system or the aftermarket controller with the non-iDrive system.Deepseaskateboard said:Hi Dave,
I was reading another forum on the internet, I think you were on it.
It was saying the oem iDrive controller can’t be used with an android head unit, if the car didnt have idrive to start with.
Has anything changed since then, or can it be coded in etc?
I am more interested in the units with the built in carplay, but would rather use the BMW controller.
I have fitted the tweeters, as per your youtube video. They clip straight in! Thanks!
Roddy said:Have you seen these replacement Android screens which integrate with BMW iDrive? For those without iDrive they supply a controller, otherwise it uses the original.
Very interesting..... Not sure how these things hold up in sunshine, it's bloody hot here in summer

That'll teach me not to skim through threads, first time I'd seen the integration working like that. Oops....
Spendy though.
I have just bought a 2012 E89 but doesnt have the I-drive. I called my local BMW garage to see if this could be bought and installed and they said no for my model. After seeing the great video i am now confused. So this would work on a non idrive car?. Do you know of any company that would supply and fit?. I am in Edinburgh so am i best calling Auto Electricians?. Many thanks.AnubisZed said:The How-To video is now on-line, sorry but it is 1 hour and 5 minutes long, but then there is a lot of detail.

Basically your local BMW garage doesn't know what they are talking about regarding this unit. The Z4 in the video is mine, it is a non-iDrive one and I did the whole installation without issue. The sellers quote for iDrive and non-iDrive Z4's, this is because if you have a non-iDrive then they include the aftermarket iDrive controller to operate it, which if you already have iDrive then you wouldn't need it. A BMW dealer wouldn't know this, so hence their response.PHILGZ4 said:I have just bought a 2012 E89 but doesnt have the I-drive. I've fitted quite a few of these since making the video and all, bar one, have been to non-iDrive Z4's.
I don't supply (there is a link in the video description) but I do fit, although I'm down in Grantham, Lincolnshire, so a bit of a drive for you :driving:

I’d be sorting out a suitable date with Dave and be making it a few days trip![]()
