And the problem goes on and on

Begin to think i have made the biggest mistake of my life in buying my Z4, one week after buying it i had to have a new clutch and DMF, cost lots :(
Then when i press on the brakes the engine RPM goes up, various comments being vacuum problems and MAF, so bought a new MAF as i could not see and leaks, again big cash :(
But still the same, made no difference, on top of all that the MAF code will not delete from the ECU and now the car is like a bag of s..t, idle is lumpy and misfiring and no power from her.
Being down to a recommended garage from this forum this morning to try and get to the bottom of the problem, after sometime they found nothing, no errors except the MAF error code which still wont delete.
They did find however find a air leak around the throttle body using a smoke test , properly the o-ring that seats the body to the engine.
Part ordered and back there next week to be fitted and re-tested.
At this point i don't have much hope this is going to cure the problem, i am now at the lowest point of happiness i could be with this car, will this leak cause so much problems with lumpy misfiring ????? and what about the RPM increase when brakes are pressed ??

I paid what i would call a lot of money for this car, i saved for 2 years to by the car i always wanted only to have all this.
If the o-ring does not resolve the problem i really don't know what to do next, i cannot afford to put anymore cash into the car as i just don't have it, i suppose i will just brake it down or sell it as is, someone might sort it out cheap and have themselves a bargain. :(

Not too sure about the brake and the associated throttle response, but sure a leak around the seal for the throttle body could cause some lumpy idling issues. Where did you the Z from??

Did you not notice any of these things when buying the car? Surely it would be obvious if the clutch was shot.

Awkward... You'd think clutch and DMF being shot would be obvious I suppose, was it really or was that what a garage said. Not everyone is as mechanically minded / interested I guess.

To the OP: in for a penny, in for a pound. You've bitten the bullet now - you'll stand to lose a lot more if you get rid I would imagine. Find a decent garage that knows what they're doing, sort it all out and with any luck you'll have years of happy motoring on those brand new parts. Budget for suspension bits in the future though. I've never sh*gged a clutch on any car so she's probably not had much in the way sympathy.

Clutch is no problem as i said i took that into account so accept that, i saw the old Clutch, down to rivets, the DMF you could get your little finger between the plates and you could turn them 10deg
Suspension has all been replaced and lowered with M system and new shocks.
Yes was bought from a forum member and no i did not notice any problems with the car when buying apart from a small leak in a coolant pipe which was replaced the following day after purchase.
The clutch on buying was biting high so thought it might be the self regulator, at worst i budgeted for a clutch as there not to expensive, what i was not expecting was for the DMF to be almost totally shot as well, total cost was just shy or £1000 in all.
Now it has developed all these extra problems, RPM issue might be Brake servo issue but cant confirm but guy at the garage said it don't feel right to him so have now idea.
I have changed the MAF for a genuine one, again more cash £295 and not some cheep ebay crap but the MAF error code will not go, this might be down to the leak around the throttle body but cant be sure, at some point someone added the sound generator kit, but would he have remove the throttle body and not used a new gasket which may cause a leak ?????

As a end note : at any time the EML light has never come on, but it does work as see it when turning key and stays on for a few seconds. the engine on idle feels like it is misfiring and again when driving.

Never felt this low about a car in my life to be honest and just dont know which way to turn now.

I have had throttle body problems and it caused all sorts of problems. So i wouldn't be surprised if it fixes all the problems.
Mine ran rough and hunted for revs. And went into safe mode so i couldn't even drive it! Fixed the throttle body and it was all good. I did have a throttle body related error code on mine though.

As for the clutch.. Maybe that's one to take on the chin as it should have been checked. And if your not sure about this stuff. Take a friend or hire someone to check it out. Saying that i know a thing or 2 about cars and still brought a lemon that needed fixing up!!

There is nothing worse than a car that's playing up.You could ask the guy you bought the car from for some cash back to soften the blow ,he does not have to give you any money back, but if he has a conscience as you have only had the Z a couple of weeks .
How soon after the clutch repair did the rough running appear, could it be something the garage have damaged or not replaced correctly.
When the sun comes out you will feel the love for the Z.

Just because the EML light isn't on doesn't mean there aren't faults. I'd get a cable and read the codes myself, cheaper than having someone else do it every time. If the MAF code is still there then perhaps there is a leak somewhere else? Worth taking apart the sound generator to have a look at condition?

I feel your pain, but you've probably spent too much to walk away now.

Hopefully the vacuum leak \ rough idle will easily be sorted and you'll be on your way to a summer of fun.

Need to read what the MAF code is actually saying, DIS would tell you this info. I bet it'll probably be MAF reading low as in air is being sucked into the intake elsewhere along the line that the MAF isn't reading, hence the fault code not deleting, or instantly coming back everytime the car is started.

UPDATE UPDATE :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

All good !

So after here and there an no positive answers i decided to investigate myself, i had already fitted a new MAF so never thought it could be the part of problem, however i convinced the dealer to get me another one, helpful he was and it arrived just a hour after he ordered it, i went and collected it and set about fitting it, before that i decided while the MAF was out i would take all the vacuum pipes off and check them one by one.
So started at the top and worked down towards the manifold, all good nothing wrong so far until i got to the throttle body only to find the steel jubilee clip was broken and not tight ! so fitted a new clip and re-assembled, fitted the replacement MAF and started the car, BINGO no more rpm increases when i pushed the brake, so it seems i had a faulty new MAF !!.
OK still running lumpy and miss firing, so got out my OBD2 wifi adapter opened up the iphone app again, cleared down the error code, re-scanned and got piston 2 misfire, easy one this, can only be plug or coil pack, swapped coilpack 2 for coilpack 5, re did scan and error code for piston 5 now came up so bought a new Original Bremi coil pack, fitted, started and now all 100% with no more error codes or EML light.

So a happy ending to a long story. :D :D :D :D :D

I will, next week when i get paid buy another 5 coil packs as there all going to go sooner or later.
The faulty coilpack has a nice burn mark on the side and does look like its had its day

I would say one thing, if you have what you think is a MAF problem don't buy cheap copy units, i tried two before biting the bullet and buying a original Bosch, but even then the first Bosch one was faulty but got there in the end !!!!!

P.S Thanks for all your support, im happy bunny again !

Really pleased for you! Was a horrible read previously. I had major teething problems with my current z, which really soured things originally and I just wanted my old one back. However all got sorted, hopefully like you now, and the grins soon :driving: :driving: :driving:  came!! Hope you get out and enjoy it now!

I drove this car before you bought it - and I drive a 3.0si - I thought the car was spot on and I told the owner this - good car well looked after and genuine

Once you start to pull these cars apart you have to be very careful who you trust to do it and what parts you use

Never a truer saying buy cheap buy twice - a lesson for the future here

Hope you now enjoy some great Z4 motoring

Excellent

I only read this earlier and saw how grotty your initial Zed ownership had been.
Glad to hear it's now behaving as it should. Get out and enjoy it now and you should become firm friends!! :driving:

Glad everything turned out ok in the end. I had an inlet manifold problem on a previous car (non Z) and it caused all sorts of issues before i discovered it. All's well that end well :D
