As some may have read I previously asked a question about vinyl dyes etc as I want to change the interior colour of my Z4. I didn't want to spend Hundreds (or even thousands when it comes to seats) so I decided to give vinyl dying a try. Having received loads of samples and trying them on some leather spare parts I had I've decided to go ahead and make a start!

(I will update this thread as I progress)

The first Door card is almost finished... just need to put a "topper" on it as they call it and then remove the masking tape, and vinyl dye the leather part red.

In case anyone is curious, I am using TRG Black Vinyl Dye from http://www.vinyldye.co.uk . (And yes, I am aware it's a little cheaper via eBay but they were really helpful to me so wanted to support their business so to speak)

Hey, gotta love a good bit of project car. This whole car has beena project car for me as I picked it up for £1500 as it hadn't been very well looked after (Roof didn't work, dented wing, broken panel inside - all of that I've fixed now of course 8) )

It should dry to a satin ish finish apparently - then you're meant to use a 'topper' if you want it to be either a Matt or Gloss finish. It was still tacky when I took the picture, so more shine than there would be once dried.

I do hope that when you're done you don't think what I do sometimes in the Zed, which is: " bloody hell, it's dark in here!".

Looks like a nice job

Remember spraying the door cards on my last car ready for a show used the Halfords bumper black spray gave a nice satin finish only thing I never wore a mask boy did I feel like crap later but did have some cool dreams :D
 
I have a 53 plate car which has the grey plastic as opposed to the slightly later black.... I much prefer the black as more of a contrast against the red seats. I'd love to change it all but don't really fancy a whole interior swap with the dash etc..

What colour is your dash? Also, are you doing switches etc? The mountings I mean? I'm assuming it's all a spray job?

I know that feeling!

Back in 2003 I bought a Seat Leon Cupra in metallic black (Black Magic IIRC) with black leather, sometimes it felt a bit doom-like!

Given that Sport model Coupes have a black headlining I really wanted to avoid a black interior. :lol:

But seeing as you have a Roadster you can always look at the sky (although this time of year that is usually black too).

Brave of the OP, but it looks pretty good in his photo. Should look even better with red on the leather. :thumbsup:

That was exactly my reasoning behind this... plus paint costs I reckon I'll total £150 compared to at least £2000 with an interior swap (Including red seats). I originally expected about £50 of paint, but that vinyl dye doesn't cover much area as you need about 6 or 7 coats to build it up I've found so costs will be a bit more than I first anticipated. a 1.5L Red dye for the seats (with enough left over for other parts if I want) cost me £80 and includes the leather prep, leather cleaner, the colour, and the finish (choice of gloss,matt or satin. I've chosen satin as that's the "most popular/normal" for seats at least.

I'll let you know once I've added the top coat finisher :rofl: hopefully it's permanent and stays where it's put. But then I don't wear cream chinos so Ive no worries there :lol:

Brave or Stupid... will soon see! It's a shame the leather part doesn't come off (at least, doesn't come off easy) but I didn't fancy breaking anything so just masked it off. Just awaiting delivery of more black for the second door card and other bits :thumbsup:

I like the way this is going. Not sure I've ever seen a black and red door before? More often you see red paired with a dark grey type colour? Could be wrong! More pics please :poke: :)

haha as soon as I get the black parts painted I Will :) got seat no 2 to do yet, and then whilst the seats are out, I'm applying fabric dye to get a black carpet :D

the facelifts are black with red - just pre/fl which had red with grey :)
