Re: Manual or Auto
Post by Bing - Sun Sep 08, 2013 10:00 pm

See, the weird thing is, whist I love the comfort, convenience and flexibility of my auto box - especially if I start commuting a lot again - I will discard it in a moment and not look back if/when I get an ///M :?

3.0Si Sport Roadster, Black Sapphire, Dream Red leather with lots of toys and lots of mods...

Hell yes

And 9 months later I bought PVRs. Not looked back, isn't ever getting old :driving:

Whilst i always looked towards the M with curiousity it was never with a great longing , however i think that may have had a bearing in my surprise once purchased at just how special the car is to own + drive & it has far surpassed any expectations i had beforehand
2 months in i still find myself popping the bonnet to stand , stare & give it a dust with a soft cloth  of the 2 TTs,Z3,Z4,330Ci & Alfa Brera its the first since my Zcoupe that ive bothered to put my plate on , would recommend to anyone considering one

Driving Stuart Truman's in May that year did it for me. I was hooked, and what was a possibility had become inevitable. Though the plan wasn't to get one that quickly... Really pleased it's worked out for you Andy, I was a bit worried given how you've gone through cars

I think without knowing ive been searching for something to replace the 964 which will always be a regret that i sold :(
The Zcoupe came the closest but that had to go as i needed the cash at the time , the M is as close to the aircooled Porsche as ive been , its not perfect by any means but it has character , mechanical noise & does all i want on the road with supreme ease , its a great car & i'm enjoying every minute , i know i am as the VED isn't bothering me at all :P

Can you play the M up a little more please Mr Wilks?!
Whats in the Ms character that's lacking in a 3.0i - 100bhp?
Half price tax in the 3.0i is all the character I need although when the mortgage is paid off, who knows....

Scrap that - Courtesy of Parkers guide
In fact it’s difficult to justify paying the extra over the standard Z4 3.0-litre, as that is only a little slower but is easier to live with and much cheaper to buy and run. Unfortunately the Z4M doesn't live up to the standards of the other M models from BMW.

Just look at the prices of ///M's. Holding firm :)

Drive one, that's all I'm going to say.

The 3.0 is more than capable enough , i'm not playing that down , there is just more magic with the M that makes the extra costs to own seem secondary :?
if you get chance to drive one then do , the feel from the wheel is great :driving: although the biggest difference ive noticed is the way it soaks up & absorbs the roads/bends as opposed to feel & fight as with the 2 previous Zs ive had ?
They were both great cars & i was expecting to feel just a little difference from the power but its more than that , the mechanical noise is terrific , almost old fashioned ? Ive had much quicker cars , or cars that have felt much quicker :wink:all i would say is if you are happy with the 2.0/2.5/3.0 Z4 then you should feel no regrets paying the extra ££ for the M version

You can't just look at it as just more BHP sunnchipie, the M is so much more than just more power alone. When I had my 3.0si I thought an M would be pointless as the si has plenty of grunt and silky smooth, but then I drove and bought an M and they are almost worlds apart, hard to explain but as Srhutch says, drive one, you'll see what it's all about.

+1, drive one, then form an opinion. You might hate it, but I doubt it.

Lots of people don't want the cost of the M and don't see the point. That's fine, each to their own, and I certainly don't think of other Zs as being inferior. But it's definitely not simply about 80/100bhp, nor is it about speed. I'm not sure about it being less easy to live with than a 3.0, I'd be interested to know what makes it harder to live with in your opinion. Also which other M models it doesn't live up to and why not ?

Anyway, it was my dream - you don't need to share it :D

Haha I want to be in your dreams!

All serious questions. I cant afford one at present, its just interesting to know what the extra money is going on.
Hopefully one will come up for sale in a local garage so I can take it for a 'test drive'

You could always through an Alpina into the mix... :poke:

Nah, no point in going from a 3.0, to the Alpina to end up finally with the Ultimate - the M :poke:

If you are anywhere near Lancs then id happily meet up for a drive , being honest the car i bought was the first M car id driven , hope all the others are the same :?

I was in the same place. To be honest I couldn't afford mine outright, the bank is still invoicing me for it monthly

There's no rush, the 3.0 is great fun, I had an Si Sport for 2.5years and loved every minute. For me a huge amount of the enjoyment comes from this forum and meeting the people in person, going on runs, shooting the breeze at Brands Hatch on an unreasonably cold Wednesday morning... The car I drive is only a part of that, just the thing that makes everything else possible.

First M car I had driven too (apart from Stu's MR). Always wanted an M car though since I was quite young. Just worked out the way it has, buying my first Z and being on here.

There's loads of info on here, stick around a while, soak it all up 8)

I wanted something that was the "best in breed"'. I never looked at anything other than black Z4M roadsters. See my signature for what's sitting in my garage. :)

Every drive is always fun, even being stuck in traffic seems better in the Zed. :)

I confess however that having had 14 absolutely trouble-free months I do wonder whether there's an expensive bill lurking around the corner. :x

That concern is then offset by the knowledge that it has to be worth at least what I paid for it and I have never had that before! :)

So with 3 smiles and 1 frown it's an overall :) :) from me.

surely the only way your going to notice the difference in performance is on a track....

As we have said before, it's not just about the extra power. Get yourself a test drive, but be prepared to be hooked.

This has been an interesting discussion. I've had my Si SE Coupe for only 6 weeks, and its hard to imagine such a huge difference in the M.

That said, I was surprised how much better Red is than my 944 S2 was.

Already I am very curious to experience an M, even though I can't really afford one. Plus I still get a little anxious about potential bills and failures with my own zed, so I don't think I could mentally cope with owning an M just yet :D

stuartC, if you want an objective opinion from someone you know then ask Ruth - she's driven sammyz's M quite a few times.
