My Dad did ours... Wish he hadn't, as it turns out that in the 19th century they used to own a large chunk of Fife in Scotland, so they were minted. But then they either lost it, sold it or the family diverged - can't remember which, but the result is that I am definitively not minted. Careless buggers...

My dad/grandad keep trying to get me involved in their ongoing research, but other than finding out who's been bad and who's spent the family's fortunes I'm not that interested.

They did all their research manually, going to the local churches/graveyards/register offices and spending days down at Kew.

Our current tree is in both paper & electronic format - but getting a tree printed at a reasonable size can be difficult/expensive. Getting ours printed onto 1 x A0 sized piece of paper requires me to reduce the boxes to be about 1cm x 2cm each - but that does cover about 400 years.

Me too. Been doing my family for well over ten years. Never found any money either

I also do it for others as a sideline to my main business - I've done about a dozen or so trees over the last couple of years - so, if anyone needs a hand PM me...

I'm loving doing ours. We weren't filthy rich in the past but my brothers wife's family were minted!
In fact we are all off on Sunday visiting a hotel which used to be her great granddad's house and the owner has kindly said we can go and have a nosey. :D

Have you got any tips for foreign research? My husband is Italian and it's proving to be a bugger on that side!

Yeah, that's a tricky one. The problem is that a huge amount of the internet based documents (for records outside of the UK) have been collated in the US, by members of the Mormon (LDS) Church. Most Italians were Catholic and the Catholic Church have seemingly been reluctant to allow the LDS to transcribe their information... what sites have you been looking at so far?

My Dad's been trying to do ours he's got so far back (not sure how far) and hit a brick wall it would appear the family came over Ireland at some point and that is proving to be the stumbling block and again I'm not really sure just how much effort he has put into it, but think he's been on ancestory without success.

I was doing ours, you can do a limited amount of searching on freebmd.org.uk
We got much further back on one side of the family than the other, mainly because they had a massive family.

Not much for me to look up, my mother was satan herself and my father died when I was 6 months old (I think she zapped him)

You cant go much further back than the great evil one ...... :D

funnily enough, I married satan's sister, who would in fact also be my auntie ....... no wonder Im messed up

Changing the subject slightly did anyone see the 'Who do you think you are' with Mathew Pinsent.
It turned out he was a descendant of one of Henry VIII wives (Katherine Howard IIRC) and a bit further back a King himself, but due the fact in medieval times royalty thought themselves descended from God they unveiled this scroll which had his family tree going back to God himself.

round where I live, its easy. They're all related (vertical family tree, no branches.....)

Is that like the opposite of in the Fens where it's like a spider's web? :)
