An M550d chasing a tail-happy Z4 M Coupe in the rain

That M was definitely with DSC off. You can't get anywhere near that amount of tail movement with it enabled.

Completely disagree. I've had that and more when accelerating hard around a sharp bend in the wet.

Even my 3.0 will do it with everything still switched on in that kind of weather. Requires very clumsy driving just like the person in the video.

Two clear different driving skill levels, though agree with many on here both should have known far better than take some of those risks on blind corners where any of us could have been a tourist coming the other way.

It's very easy to critiscise the driving, when looking through the cameras perspective, however the cameras field of view is limited compared to the drivers view, so I do not judge.

I would personally not drive like that on a public road be it wet or dry, but then I'm a big scaredy cat with limited driving talent :D

My other point goes back to the M5, surely the 550d would give you 98% of the performance of the M5 but for less cost?

It's the old exponential curve thing. The joy of an M is in the last two percent :)

as has already been said....

One can't judge their lines because you can't see where they are looking... camera is fixed a head is not...

that said, with the amount of surface water throughout I would not have been driving like that :o

IMO if you can't stay in your own lane you're driving either too fast or beyond your ability...

We did have a discussion Sars!! Although I still think we'd arrive at the same conclusions!! :)

Notwithstanding the appalling conditions, as I said above, I am pretty certain the M550d is 4WD which renders any comparison of the driving skills of these two drivers meaningless.

One thing I meant to say and forgot ...

the camera car was following WAY TOO close to the Z4 give how lairy the Z4 was getting. If the Z4 driver had got it wrong and had a big off, there were several places where the camera would have become part of it... Placed a lot of faith in the Z4 drivers' ability to keep it on the road.

debating whether to post this on the ADUK forum.... :?

Yes the M550d is four wheel drive or in BMW speak xDrive.

Okay, so hands up anyone who hasn't overtaken someone

Sounds like not many of you have driven in the Alps. Quite often on hairpins there is plenty of visibility round the corner, especially when climbing (which they were).I don't think they were going as fast as the footage suggested, lots of full throttle, and thus noise, but a steep climb meaning pretty steady speeds.I'd like to have seen them do the same thing coming back down!!. That 550's got some go,very impressed.Yes, some silly driving at times, but up to them if they disappear off an unguarded bend. Don't forget, these mountain roads tend to be very sparsely populated with traffic, especially in those conditions.

Well i certainly can't get that much sliding with it on... Check out the slide and fish-tailing at about 04:30 for example.

oh certainly you can...
I've even managed to spin out in the rain while being in dtc mode.. you just need tires like potenzas re50a..
So in my opinion the MC had traction switcjed to dtc

Woudn't argue with spinning out in the rain with the traction control on - I had a couple of moments on potenza runflats on my 3.0... But the ///M doesn't have run flats, unless there is on non-RFT version ? And I thought that there is no intermediate traction mode in the ///M as it has the LSD, so it is either on or off ?

Buy sum decent tyres. Object of the game is not to skid, and keep the car on the road.

I have non-RF Bridgestone Potenza Re050a 225 and 255 and I would rather call them decent - on dry track they are better than toyo r888 srmi slicks, its just wet road they dont cope woth well ;-)

I thought that the M also has dstc and dtc mode in which you have esp off and traction controll on - so it is in non M z4
