Amber engine light and lots of shuddering

Hey people,

So driving home this evening I noticed what I can only describe as a 'slip' in the engine power followed by the engine light flashing yellow and the whole car shuddering, irrespective of what gear it is in.

The lights now stopped flashing but obviously concerned, I've just forked out a small fortune for some new tyres and oil service!

Can anyone help? It's parked up at the moment going to try it in the morning. :(

So have spoken to the Stealers, searched the internet and asked for some advice off friends.

Sounds like it may be a damaged Spark Plug which is causing the cyclinders to mis-fire. Can smell un-burnt fuel quite strongly.

Any other views?

I recently had the O2 sensor replaced in mine under warranty but didn't have the shuddering symptons that you mention.

I would say it sounds like a dodgy spark plug or ignition coil. A faulty ignition coil will make it run like a tractor and result in un burnt fuel passing through the system - limit use as un burnt fuel going through the cats is not a good idea....

O2 sensors, when broken, can lead to over or under fuelling. It could e over fuelling which is the smell you're getting?

So found out it was an ignition coil, replaced for £100 at a local BMW specialist, genuine BMW part. Seemed ok considering the dealers wanted £100 just to perform a diagnostic check on the vehicle!

Thanks for your advice guys :)

Good work....I used to have ignition coils go all of the time on the clio v6. Im assuming they are easy to fit to the z4? I might just carry a spare one in case one ever goes....
