Hi edd, don't know where you are(I'm in Bexleyheath,Kent)I would do it for you as I've used a machine polisher for years.

would machine polishing get rid of very deep scratches ?
If so, I'm in Gravesend, Kent and would pay in crates of beer to get my car fixed in 2 places.

If you've gone really deep then you may have to flat out gently with P1500-2000 wet and dry before polishing up with cutting compound.

Post up a pic.

If the area isn't too large (and in this case it doesn't appear to be) and the damage not too deep (doesn't appear to be that either) it's really not too difficult to polish minor blemishes and scratches out by hand. Safer too, especially in a tight area like that.

Coincidentally, just today I was repairing some deepish scratches using that BMW touch-up paint that everybody loves so much (minor sarcasm there). That involved prepping with 1000 grit wet paper, leveling with 1000 and then 2000 grit, which makes a scary looking smudge, and then finishing off with a couple of grades of liquid compound. All by hand, and the result is a beautiful scratch-free mirror finish. A bit time consuming, but the results are worth it.

Go slowly, go lightly, and, as others have said, try the finest abrasive you have before bringing out the heavy artillery.

Well I finally got around to sorting this out, and it was surprisingly painless. The scratches looked much worse than they were luckily. I used this stuff, £7 from Halfords:

I used washing up liquid to take all the wax off, dried the paint and then applied using a micro fibre cloth. Once done I washed the car and re-waxed the areas. Before and after photos:
