Whenever I see a Motorway Information sign showing destination distances - for example, tonight's sign on the A1 stated " Grantham 48 miles, 50 minutes" - my first thought is "challenge accepted!" :evil:
 
48 miles in 50 minutes.............

What do these people think drive? Horse n cart.............. :evil:
 
well, it is the A1 so two lorries side-by-side, one driving at 0.0000001mph faster than the other - a.k.a. rolling roadblock :) However, would have thought they'd have made the maths easier to work out average speed :D

I play a similar game with the sat nav arrival time :driving: :evil:

Easy to do though. Try beating Waze - now that's a challenge.
 
The Volvo satnav is supposed to "learn" - still doesn't get anywhere near a realistic arrival time though :oops: Might have to try Waze...

And yes, I take a cursory glance at the numbers when I see those signs. Motorway signs in general are seldom to be believed.
 
I use Waze all the time. It is supernaturally accurate in its arrival time estimates. I have beaten it before, but only by risking my licence... I've also learned to just trust the routes it recommends, though you can get it to show alternates & their ETAs as well. The other thing it does well is hold the map and track your route when you go out of signal areas, as long as you don't stop and switch it off when you do :headbang:
 
I've been testing Waze on the recommendation of member BMWZ4MC and it's quite good, but doesn't seem to show enough street names if you're just driving along instead of following a route (compared with my Garmin). Can't complain at the price :thumbsup:
 
OP - Never seem to get those sort of signs around North Shropshire but would probably just ignore them anyway.

SatNav - Tried Waze but since I got my new 35i I'm very happy with the car's own pro Nav system, especially as I can send destinations / routes to the car from Google maps! :thumbsup:
 
Those signs are calculated by reading the Bluetooth signals of a sample of mobiles passing at set points on the roadside. (I've fitted such devices ! )

You will always beat it in a car as it takes the average (or Mean) from all vehicles inc HGVs but will exclude the top 10% (you in your Z) and the lower 10% (wide loads, convoys, etc) and then gets trimmed to censor it so it's not over 70mph.
 
Cheers Number5 - unfortunately I love collecting snippets like that, always wondered how they come up with it :thumbsup: BTW - was in the wife's Volvo, zedless for the day. So was obviously doing a steady 70. Like all Volvo drivers. :whistle:
 
Managed to shave off 45 minutes off the eta this morning on a 3.45 hour journey :)

But then I was traveling through Germany, flat out at times. Rather relaxing though to not have to scan for cameras all the time ...
