Am I missing something?

For the last few trips out I've been a little concerned about the volume of intake noise I'm getting

There's a real high suction noise as she gets on song, not that it's unexpected just louder than I thought it should be

So this morning I started hunting around the air filter and intake hoses, I'd half expected to find a split rubber hose, instead all seemed well but on the other side of the engine I find this:-

Is it me or should there be a rubber gaiter here??

No wonder I could hear the engine noise clearly from the cabin!

Hi,
Yes it's where the steering column comes through the bulkhead.

Surely it's supposed to be sealed with a boot.

Any tips on the easiest way of getting the replacement (once I source one) on there? :?

Can I just undo the one end of the UJ link and slide the new gaiter in place? or will I have to remove either the column or the rack?

looks like part number 13 is missing

Sopers BMW in Lincoln will sell and deliver you one, if getting to your dealer is an issue.

I think you are probably right, from the looks of the exploded diagram the rubber is mounted from inside the car, which I find surprising.

Looking at mine, I would have expected it the mount over the plastic collar on the engine bay side, but I can't find mention of anything that fits this way, so I guess part 13 must be it.

:)

I would have thought there would have been a locking nut (Nylock) on that bolt on the coupling as well
Check that out, I might be wrong but on such an important part?

I've had a look on real oem, doesn't seem to list any lock nut. Your right though it does seem odd.

Obviously not tonight, but could someone please post a pic of their steering column (engine bay side, as above) so I can see where the rubber boot fits.

I've searched the net but apart from the real OEM exploded diagram I can't seem to find any info.

Mines a 2007 3.0si if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance

A little update,

Been to see my local dealer who has ordered the rubber boot, should get a call sometime next week.

:)

Yeah your right, I plan to deal with that once I've got the boot to put on.

Tbh it looks worse than it is, it's only light surface rust.

I'm guessing it's been without the rubber for about 2 or 3 months before I bought the car, the rust would have been much worse if it had been any longer.

I can only guess the previous owner had the UJ swapped and must have missed the rubber in the re-fit.

It's a strange one for sure.

Least it's an easy fix. :o
