Am I mad???

Hi All

As you may or may not know, I'm currently on the hunt for my first Z (been looking s couple of months now).

So why is it that even though I've seen one of the most sorted Montego Blues ever (I think you know which one!), I'm still dithering.

Well here's why and let me preface this by saying that I'm more of a 'form over function' type of guy, so I'm not a full on petrolhead but appreciate a good engine all the same

Reason 1: "It's too much car for me"

With all the mods that have been done, I just wouldn't do it justice, it'll be wasted on me

Reason 2: "I want to make it my own"

Regardles of the fact that all the usual problem areas have been taken care of (and substantial money spent doing so), I'm still willing to forfeit all of that and spend money I don't really have on a car that hasn't had a fraction of the same work done.

Does this make any sense or do I need to book myself in to see someone!??

When I bought mine all the bits that wear out had been replaced and lots more added. It’s the reason I went after it. It was the colour I was after so although it was only a 2.2 I haven’t regretted it. It had been owned by a forum member for 8 years. If the car is sorted and the price is right can’t see the problem, you can always change things to your liking later on. And in the meantime enjoy the car. There are not many nice well looked after cars out there IMO.

I would much rather buy an imperfect (and preferably original) car and save money, so long as fixing it is within my capability, than pay top dollar for a “sorted” car. Nevertheless, well sorted cars do come along from time to time at bargain prices and I guess it makes sense to jump on these. Ask yourself whereabouts are you on the spectrum of “inveterate bargain hunting garage fiddler” to “someone just give me a perfect car, please”.

That's exactly how I feel and for clarity, the car in question is lucasxdiniz's old one, however ironically all the "original" cars that I'm seeing advertised are coming in at a higher price!

I can guarantee you what ever car you buy will need to have money spending on it. No matter how well sorted you think or told it is.

Nonsense. Just because the car in question may have lots of 'go faster' mods, doesn't mean you have to use them all at 100%, all the time.
Just nice to have them there if the mood takes IMO.

Ask yourself another question; if you delay and lose the car in question, will you regret it? If yes, then buy it. If no, then look for another.
Easier said than done admittedly!

That is a very good point, especially with these cars tapping on 20 years old.

I saw that car a few times when Lucas had it and it's a great example of a Coupe.

I can understand that you want to make your E86 your own, but I'm not sure what you could do with one which that car doesn't have!

But it's your choice, so good luck.

All good points made.

It's not so much what the car's had done to it (if I'm honest, I probably wouldn't do half the work that's be done) but more so the satisfaction knowing that YOU got it to that standard by getting your hands dirty rather than just acquiring the finished product from the off with no blood, sweat or tears involved.

Each to their own I guess!

In that case, look for a car you can put your own 'stamp' on.

Only problem with that is separating the 'wheat from the chaff', which is quite tricky. :)

No, that makes sense. It sounds like you are looking for a car like Lucas' was when he found it so good luck.

Are you dead set on a coupe? If your on a budget go for a roadster, learn the ropes on that then go for a coupé in the future.

Or realise you don't want to deal with a drowned roof motor, a sunburnt head, an OH moaning about her hair getting blown about and buy the best-looking Z4 - a Coupe! :fuelfire:

Yep. They were so popular and good looking, BMW discontinued them after just 3 years. No E89, or G29, tin-tops!

Of course, that makes them 'rare' now! :poke:
