Am I insane....?

...that I'm considering selling the E90 335i just 3 months into ownership? She's fast, practical, 4 door, great condition, BMW warrantied for another 9 months, taxed for another 12 months and just saw me to Cornwall and back.

But she lacks the magic I seek in a car. I know I need to face family facts but I don't feel much connection with her. Maybe the loss of ///Molly back in February cut deeper than I thought; maybe I'm spending too much time on here looking at everybody having fun - who knows. My mind is racing through all sorts of car scenarios. Sell up, upgrade the family Golf to a newer model and spend the rest on a 3.0i roadster or help fund an MC. Effectively tick the family box first for the driveway, then fill my garage with a plaything that has magic.

I suspect I'm being impulsive. I suspect I'm being impractical and I should be grateful I have such an amazing family car to play with when we do go out as a family on those rare, special trips that require more than our Mk4 Golf. But do I need two practical cars? Don't I just need one good practical car and one plaything?

Any advice? Tell me I'm wrong/right/what to do.

Your a great guinee pig for me inkey! I'm about a year behind you in my circumstance and so will be faced with the exact dilema!

I'm leaning towards a Golf GTI mk6/7. 5 doors and family friendly and they get such good reviews for being fun to drive. Maybe thats what your missing, you have the power but not the fun.

Second cars, like my Z4 now is just a wind up; watching it sit there doing nothing for 6 days a week is BORING :( .

I think you were right to try tick all boxes at once, but maybe lean toward a more fun hatch than a power cruiser. :)

That's my plan over the next 6 months - get wifey a decent family car for us (2 + dog). Expecting golf gti mkV, then use my Zed every day myself.

This is downsizing from the four cars we have now - a classic mini, a new fiesta titanium, a MINI clubman D with all the toys and my Zed.

I've done the multi car thing for far too long. Need to stop paying out on multiple insurances, mot, tax etc etc.

Inks if you're not happy while still in the honeymoon stage then get rid.
Imo why do you need two practical cars? A plaything and a family car, if you can do it, sounds to me like it would suit you.
That's what I would do.
And don't you ever say you are spending too much time on here, don't you leave us. :x
What does Mrs Inks think? Would she be ok with a toy and a dependable?

Without wishing to sound boring.... wont the loss of cash changing a car just after 3 months of ownership be substantial? The relative cost of motoring over the next 9months or so will be almost free compared to the 3 months that have just passed in terms of depreciation etc.

Id say keep what you got for a bit longer and just see what happens...

Dreamer - I hope I help you out for any future decision making! It's a tricky decision. And you know those times when it seems that every decision I make in life turns out to be the wrong one. Well I'm going through that at the moment and am conscious this could be another of those!

Brasseye - potentially although there's something about the e85/86 that's still more alluring to me.

Tough one. We have one practical car and mine... But Wee Bing is a lot older. Can you not chop the Golf, keep the 335, and buy a 3.0i roadster ? There are some very cheap examples out there right now - see Jonnyfive's sold recently, loads of car for a great price. Only issue is that with the 3.0 you will miss the power of ///Molly... Though that will keep you on the road back to ///M when you can

Of course you could buy mine for £9k and help me fund my ///M  You'll need to wait till I get a job though

Dr Nick - might have to be that way. See out the rest of the year and take it from there perhaps.

Carol - No plans on leaving the forum; enjoy it too much! GF would be fine with a change but I'd just have to endure the rolling eyes and 'not again' comments. Easily manageable as I'll just zone out and go to my happy place

Trouble with that formula is I have new house windows to buy and walls to build. Would love to help out with your fund too Bing but wouldnt want you to divert from your 2015 target date :D

If you're bored by 300bhp and 300 odd lb ft of torque then you're bored of life.... ;-) Just kidding, we all get bored of cars when that shine starts to wear off. Remember why you bought it and hold on. It's a cracking car but priorities change with family life. Take up mountain biking or something less costly ;-) well almost less costly...

Wife and I are only keeping the Z for a short time and it will break my heart to lose it but we do these things for a happy life. I'm planning on a 535d tourer next, practical with a straight line capability to have fun.

Bad decisions are the experiences from which we learn and grow, don't lose faith yet. We're all having fun in our Zs but we don't talk about the annoying things. Maybe you should start a thread on here "What grips your sh1t about your Z?" and see what comes up.
For me, it's that the brushed aluminum dash reflects the light into my left eye which ends up with me getting a head ache on long journeys without my sunglasses on. :headbang:

Keep what you have (or sell one car) and buy a cheap weekend toy that will ensure you get the excitement you are craving:

Do you need two cars inkey? Could you consolidate & get a E90 M3 then you have an M car & something that's relatively practical, I swapped my 520d tourer & z4m for my M3 as I didn't think we needed 3 cars when there is only 2 of us.

I only had my zed 5 months I am an expert at losing money on cars! :)

Already do the mountain biking thing so thats covered. Like your gripe on the alu trim; used to bug the hell out of me too in my old roadster with the hood down on a sunny day.

Hope you get something sorted  it's very frustrating when you don't gel with a car, it's happened to me a few times & it turns into you losing a fair amount of money. :headbang:

Never insane, sometimes 'differently minded'.

In your position I would get a VW Transporter with a second row of seats and a more useful girlfriend, plumber maybe?
