Am I going to make it?

So I didn't make it to the petrol station last night, and didn't have time this morning.

The last time this happened i made it to the preferred petrol station with the "miles to go" readout having just switched to "--" about 2 miles previously, a total of about 280 miles from the last fill, the needle firmly at the bottom. I just about managed to get 50 litres in - 49.9-something.

Now i have read that the tank is 55 litres, which i theory should give me another 20 miles or so (depending on where the fueal take-off is in the tank, what shape the tank is etc.

Therefore i am curious to know how low you have gone (ie what's the most fuel you've managed to squeeze in after running low?

Tonight i'm going to be heading into the final frontier - beyond the event-horizon by about 2 litres.

I've gone to 10-20 miles left before, but never again as it threw up some error codes shortly after. They don't like being run dry at all

Ive gotten 30 miles in after the readout has gone to zero a very dangerous game to be honest. The reserve tank is 5 Litres.

However one day i i had hit zero and i got to my destination 5 miles later through the town and parked up thinking i had plenty for the petrol station down the road later. I was wrong, started up the car a few hours later and couple of metres down the road i looked like a burk.

Please avoid this. as flimper has found out the hard way it's not good for the engine. Mine has never gone below 15 miles on the read out and that is still low IMO and I only average around 20 mpg. I try and fill up when it reach the quarter mark.

Interesting - what is the theory for the cause of the error codes?

Mine threw out a 29D2 DME: Combustion misfire cylinder 6 with fuel shut off to be precise :)

On the wales meet last year i had mine down to -- and still covered 8 miles. Tank still had 5L left!

Im interested in how it calculates how many miles you have left...does it base it on your recent driving style? or does it calculate it on your overall MPG? For example if i had just come off a motorway and i was avereaging 30mpg but i was now in a town and will get considerably less MPG..how does it calculate this?

Should be an average of the two in that scenario but I was always led to believe cars calculate based on recent driving habits. I'm sure it re-calculates every 15 mins or so?

It's based on recent mpg - you can make it go up, even when you're nearly empty by driving like an old granny

So if you have been driving like a loony and its on --5 and you start to drive more reasonably it would maybe go up to .15? This would be intresting to try if it was on --- after some spirited driving.

Yes.

I've started off with 100 miles to go showing (after driving around central London for a while), and after I've driven 100 miles it's still said 100 miles to go. Still only got an average 25mpg though, so I must have been getting 15mpg or so in central London (don't think I got out of 3rd).

Even when I fill up after my normal weekend driving it might show a 250 mile range, and then it will keep increasing as I'm driving and getting better MPG.

Only ever ran out of fuel once, and don't plan on doing it again (was attempting to make it to the petrol station at Manchester Airport, but didn't, and had armed police screech to a halt beside me on the airport approach road), so simply fill up as soon as practical once the light comes on.

Anyone know how many litres left when light comes on?

My guage is usually at a quarter when the light comes on! (Around 40 miles on the computer). The manual says it comes on at 8 litres remaining:

Reserve
Once the fuel level has fallen to the reserve
zone of approx. 2.1 US gallons/8 liters, indicator
lamp 1 lights up continuously.
Do not drive until the fuel tank is empty
and refill it well in advance. Otherwise the
engine may not operate properly and damage
could result.<
When you switch on the ignition, the indicator
lamp comes on briefly to indicate an operational
check.

Have always been told the likelyhood of all the cr@p that floats on the top can get sucked through, block the filters & possibly the injectors...

Prefer to do the honerable thing when the 'feed me' light comes on...

I have been around the 20 mark. Never lower. Hate to think of any sludge that might be pumped through by running so low... :(
