Am I an idiot? (~1200 mile Euro trip over 5 days)

Plan is to go visit some of the girlfriend's family in Heidelberg. Thinking about getting a Tuesday afternoon ferry over, returning Sunday evening/early Monday morning.

Complete insanity? I'd be the only driver (girlfriend doesn't have a UK licence and isn't insured). Probably want to add cruise control before I leave.

Would really want to do the 500 mile dash to Heidelberg in one or two days, then the return journey would be the leisurely bit.

Any best bits along the way? Or should I just fly to Frankfurt/Luxembourg and rent a car?

Can't help with routing, but you're not mad - me and my son (who was 12) drove almost 500 miles to Scotland to go on a forum hoon last year then drove back again, all in 3 days. Odometer read 1,300 miles when we got home. I'm on the edge of deciding to do it again next weekend, possibly over four days this time though. I say DO IT

Just got back from European road trip. Three weeks starting in Amsterdam then Leipzig, Prague, Vienna, Dolomites, Venice and Lago Maggiore then back via Switzerland and France. 2600 miles. But not in a Zed.

With Bing on this. It's why you bought it! :driving:

I've done the Le Mans hoon 4 years on the trot now in the M. Not quite the same distance (2/3 to be fair, but another couple of hundred once there  ) - but immense fun.

My best advice is not to simply pelt along the autoroutes/bahns etc all the way. A motorway is a motorway after all, scenery wise at least. Plan in some A road equivalent action and enjoy the drive :driving:

I drove from Birmingham to Lille then Paris and back again a few days later last December. I think that's about 850 miles in total.

I was the only driver and as long as you enjoy driving and have some good music on your iPod, you'll be fine.

Our friends think we are totally mad having driven from Leeds to Wales a couple of times for a forum hoon. Plus taking two cars to Europe, driving down to Switzerland.

I would say go for it. I found driving less tiring over there. I agree with the mixing up of motorways and smaller roads though. Have fun :)

I drove my old Z from Birmingham to nice in one day - left at 4am and got there about 10ish, total of 997 miles - flipping knackered afterwords, but was easy enough!

you'd be mad not to - isn't that why you bought the car.

Driving on the continent is far more pleasurable than in the UK, less people on the roads, and bigger distances between towns…….. Go for it and enjoy

I did a small tour of france/belgium with the mrs, more mileage, over 6 days. We loved every minute. Go for it.

no hope for me if you think you are mad ........ :D

Driving from Trondheim/oslo/Gothenberg/copenhage/hamburg/amsterdam at the weekend - 22 hrs on a good day, then back again 5 days later.

Road trips are ace ... as they say. Just get in the car, point and go.
You will enjoy it - thats what the zed is for.

Nope, regularly do 1.6k in 6/7 days with small child on board. Although, not sure I would want my bones shaken to bits for that amount of miles ;). Never done it in the zed.
