Aluminium Pedals

Ok, finally got around to fitting the set.
It took me one hour 45 mins to complete, from tools out to tools put back!

It’s a pretty hard job which requires at least a five week contortionist class prior to attempting.

I found the mini ratchet to be essential, as well as a strong metal cutting drill bit.

I went for the non drilled ‘push on’ pedals

They do look good!

Are you happy with them? Is a template to drill the holes provided or how did you do it?

Yeah, very happy.
I am surprised actually, what a difference they make.

There is a template yeah, just cut it out and stick it on.

It’s a bit fiddly drilling, as the pedals under the rubber are grooved slightly, and both were metal.

I used the template, but then placed the pedal over the hole to double check the positioning.

I am looking at the dead pedal now... would be great to get that sorted the same. I am thinking a custom cnc job.
.... thinking being the key word!

Haha the Pedals are a good one!

After the wind deflector, my wheels need some love.
The list is never ending!

 I know what you mean. I have to say though I am enjoying tinkering around and doing mods to this old car then having a brand new car which I would be more cautious about taking apart or if it's on a PCP or lease you can't touch it at all.

I am tempted by the front splitter, but also think the Z4 is pretty good as it is. I have not done much:

BMW Stubby Aerial
Boot LED (replaced the useless stock bulb)
BMW aluminium pedals

In progress: OEM wind deflector

To be done:
Floating centre caps
Paint Callipers (either clear lacquer, silver or black)
Change break discs and pads
Wheel refurb
New tyres (none run-flat possibly)
Aluminium valve stems

Mulling over:

LED footwell lighting (oem)
Puddle lights

Then I want some stone chips removing.

I have re painted the drivers seat bolster, and gone over some of the interior with a coral red leather paint, looks really good now!

List of jobs goes on and on, but it’s a bit of a hobby!

Your list is almost similar to mine. Work already done:

Refurbed Alloys and new centre caps
Bumper painted and bottom grill areas colour matched
Painted calipers and hubs
Stubby aerial
Full interior and boot LEDS + extended LED strip in the boot
OEM footwell lights (my car didn't come with extended lighting package) I was thinking about the door puddle lights but I can't be asked to wire through the doors etc.
Full professional detail with multi stage polish and ceramic coating
Instrument cluster LEDS changed to white and F80 M3 / M4 style gauge faces
Coded door mirrors to close with key, Digital Speedo
OEM Wind deflector fitted (the central part, I am still looking for the hoop inserts)
Osram cool blue angel eyes bulbs
Carbon Fiber interior dash and door trims
Dash Cam

On the pending list as when time and funds allow:

ECU remap
Gearbox remap
Those alloy pedals!
Upgraded sound
Eibach / Bilstein suspension kit
Some sort of sports exhaust (undecided as yet which)
Maybe just maybe 19" alloys

I have thought about adding spoilers and splitters side skirts etc but just like you at times I think the car looks good the way it is and I also worry how those parts affect the aerodynamics of the car. I mean most of these manufacturers of spoilers and splitters don't wind tunnel test them so what effect they have who knows. If anything I might go for the BMW M Performance style front splitters for my standard (Non M Sport) bumper.

Out of interest guys, what LED bulbs did you use to replace the footwell? I'd like a brighter light in the boot and maybe in the footwell too.

I've been looking at these pedal covers (slip on) for a while now but trying to find either a set that fits the E89 or individual is proving difficult. It's annoyed me enough that I've got a post ready to go once I find all the info to solve it! (because the DCT accelerator pedal is different to the normal ones).

Apparently, getting pedal covers for an E89 is difficult work and no one has done it before! ...At least, according to my rudimentary google-fu.

Most kits for a 1/2/3/5 series are very easy if you have a manual or automatic transmission for all the pedals. It's a different story for the footrest/dead pedal covers though, as no one seems to do one for the E89 nor is there a part listed on realoem (at least, not that I could find). So I set about trying to find the closest approximation and went from there.

So I set about some research and came up with the following. I searched for all configurations while I was at it just to help you guys out should you consider some pedal covers.

Accelerator pedal:
Automatic/DCT - The side of the pedal is a lot deeper than on the manuals, otherwise dims are identical. Any pedal cover will work as long as it fits an automatic transmission, this part number (35426859999), or these models - 1 series (F52), 3 series (all E90s), 5 series (All E60s, All F10s) (all automatics)
Manual - Manual pedals are different in that they don't have the kickdown switch at the end of the pedal, so the cover must be for a manual transmission, this part number (35426860000), or these models - 1 series (F52), 3 series (all E90s), 5 series (All E60s, All F10s) (all manuals)

Brake Pedal:
Automatic/DCT - Any pedal cover that fits this part number (35211160421) or these models: All 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,X1,X3,X4,X5,X6,X7,Z3,Z4,Z8 series (literally everything)
Manual - Any pedal cover that fits this part number (35211160658) or these models: All 1,2,3,4,X1,X3,X4,Z3,Z4 series (except the G29)

Clutch Pedal:
Manual - Same shape and size as the manual brake pedal, so any pedal cover that fits this part number (35311160659) or these models: All 1,2,3,4,X1,X3,X4,Z3,Z4 series (except the G29)

Footrest:
All E89s - This is where it gets tricky as no one actually makes one for the E89 shape.
I measured some dims to get the best approximation, and everything I've seen online seems to be out for the E89 or no dims at all.
I have found the below, which I think is the best approximation, but I believe it is still a little too wide, but I think I will give it a go and see. I think its worth a leap of faith for £30.

Depends on what you mean by pedal covers.

BMW direct sell the E and F series metal covers which screw in to the pedals. The E series pedals, which I sourced are also pictured in the Z4 E89 brochure.

(The F series pedals from bmw apparently don’t fit the E89, but they look nicer)

The E series covers for LHD have four screws for brake and clutch, and the RHD models have three screws.

Whilst there are dead pedal plates for E series LHD cars, BMW didn't bother to make one for the RHD as the foot rest shape is completely different.

If there was sufficient interest, I suppose I could source some aluminium dead pedal covers for the E89 as a one off.
It would be expensive though, as the rubber insert would need to be cannibalised from the LHD dead pedal cover which is around £70 alone. (One expensive piece of rubber)
The new aluminium plate would likely cost an additional £50 as a ball park estimate. Probs based on 10 people ordering it, making it a nice £500 job for a machinist/ fabricator.

So, it would have same holes as the LHD cover, but with the RHD shape. The extra thickness would then need to be added with some thin black plastic. (The difference in shape between the LHD and RHD rubber to metal)

I am not sure on the demand for such an item though?

Not many people seem to be adding the metal pedals, as you say.

It’s a great addition though, looks lovely. :)

Is the wiring already there for the footwell lights?

Do you know the part numbers, or LED equivalents and how easy are they to fit?

There isn't any wiring for the footwell lights. On the advice of another forum member I soldered wires to the bulb holder for the interior courtesy lamp (by the rear view mirror) and run the wiring down to the passenger footwell and then across to the drivers side.

I picked up a couple of OEM footwell light fittings for 2 or 3 GBP each from one of the scrap dealers on eBay (Railway autos I think) and I asked them to supply me the lights with a few inches of cable intact which I then used to make up my own loom. You can see the OEM light fittings below, these were fitted to a huge range of BMWs so finding some isn't difficult. The holes in the panels below the dash to fit these are already there.

IMG_9253.jpeg

I used some LED bulbs in those OEM fittings of the type you can see below, but any T10 W5W lightbulb will do:

And this is the net effect:
