If and its a big if , whats the alternative you were looking at seriously when buying a z4m (in my case mc ). I admit I looked at the Audi tt rs and the Nissan 370z but decided they were both very common on the road compared to an mc . Would have liked to have had a tvr 350c but was worried about the speed 6 engine reliability and lack of ABS.

I looked at the Boxster S and SLK AMG, old shape though, couldn't afford the new shape at the time, glad I went with the ///M

I was going through a little old school porsche phase before I got my zed, nearly got a 993c2s - best looking porsche 911 version IMO

Cayman S and e46 CSL, but both ended up being at least £5k-£10k beyond my budget for lower spec and/or higher mileage.

If I'd have had the extra £5k, then it would have been the CSL.

Stay away from Porsche 996 cheap to buy right now but will cost you a small fortune to run & mantiance cost ,a nice 993 on the other hand is a good investment as the price is on the up

It may seem a little left-field and not really in the same category of vehicle, but the new M135i seems to be everything you could ever need and I have found myself thinking of replacing the ZMC with one and dropping back down to 2 cars.

I wanted to swap my Cerbera for a t350c but didn't quite have the confidence in the marque to have another TVR, I looked at getting a 350z when I was buying the cerb aswell, but I am happy I ended up in a z4 m eventually :)

Its not easy going from tvr to something else apart from ABS & DSC on a quality build beemer . If only z4m's made a more grunty noise !

I agree saskia, don't get me wrong the zed does sound great, but it leaves me a little flat after the TVR & yes ABS is a bonus I was always locking a wheel on the cerb!

It's the fact that I can just jump in & drive the zed that I love the most, the TVR was rarely there for me when I needed it! :x

On my long-list were

TVR T350/Chim
Boxster/Cayman S
996 of various flavours
Jaguar XF-R
Various hot hatches/evo/imprezza
135i

The TVRs were great but unsuitable for 15k/year daily driving. The Boxster/Caymans put me to sleep, totally soulless things in my opinion despite being very good from a purely objective point of view. The XFRs were all 50k at the time and the 996 felt very old and a bit slow (i didnt try a turbo/GT3/2). The engine of the 135i is awful, all mid range and nothing up top.

A shortlist today would consist of a gen 2 997 and that's about it.... so a very short list

gen2 997  just gotta wait till it falls to sub £15k then i'm on it like an epileptic tree frog :)
only other car on my horizon that would get close to replacing my Zed would be a 6 series 2007 onwards . preferably the 650i but would consider 630i ?

Agree with you're choices on here - would be nice to have a 993 with a warranty and they hold value/appreciate. No ones mentioned Aston's but I guess thats a bit expensive although 997's are too !

about 3 years ago, a 'good' 993 with 50k miles would have been anywhere between £25-35K depending on S non S spec, I'd looked mainly at C2S or C4S because they had the gorgeous wider 'hips'.
The prices are still around the same now but with cars having 70-90K miles on them, so that's how well they are keeping their value. (although value is secondary when looking at these cars)
NB. Mostly 993 sold by porsche independants so only 1 -3 month warranty included

Saskia, interesting that you mentioned Astons, the v8 vantage back then was starting to dip into £35k mark, but they were early editions with extremely high mileage examples, you could probably get a better example for that money now.

But that's the 'value' aspect of the z4mc, you'd have to spend a whole lot more cash to get equivalent performance/style/quality/individuality, but even now, £35K gets you into a few interesting motos, not to mention GTRs / high mileage 997 turbo's

Yes thats very true ! Z4mc's are a bit of a bargain really as they combine so many advantages , so glad they are so rare !
