That does look lovely 8)

Condition & history is king
do they wear big mileage well?
Ask markeg, I believe his is on over 100k and it still looks pretty good

Yes, they do :D

Mines at 105k, no issues at all - thinking of replacing/upgrading some parts as its 10 years old now, but it's purely preventative maintenance - for example, just replaced the brake lines for SS as it was still on originals. Engine still starts first time, runs like a dream, still has that incredible acceleration.... Have the cylinders checked every couple of years for pressure as there are reports of HG failure after 80k miles, which will cost around £2k to repair (hence you will need a rainy day fund).

As for condition, mine has a few paintwork issues that I need to get fixed (stone chips, lacquer peel on front wing) But you'll have to get up close to see them - overall the paintwork is in excellent condition, and a few small defects is pretty standard for cars of this age and easily rectified. I've also maintained a complete FBMWSH (first at Sytners, Notts, then at Sopers, Lincoln after I spoke to their main service engineer and found he was an Alpina enthusiast and Alpina trained technician).

However I also use a local Indy who races BMWs, and has rebuilt a few in his time. He does most of the preventative stuff unless it is Alpina specialist work, in which case the car goes into Sopers. I'm also a stickler for keeping receipts and invoices, so would check if this car has that level of history. As Bing says, condition and service history is key with these :)

It went for £17,775

Lovely car. I've always had a soft spot for the Alpina Roadster. I nearly bought one 3 years into owning my E85 3.0. Just didn't get offered a good enough deal from Sytner Nottingham.

Can you elaborate on the cylinder & HG checks and likely cost ?
Mines on 78k so if not done previously I'd better start considering it.

Hey Number5 - the issue is common to the engine so is found in the B3S as well as the roadsters. Generally it starts to materialise around 80k miles through a decrease in the cylinder pressure (IIRC it's an issue due to the increased bore size and thinness of the cylinder wall giving a thin gasket wall). If you see a drop in cylinder pressure then your head gasket may be on the way out. I check my cylinder pressure every year, and am currently on 105k with no issues.

There was interest in a copper HG being sourced (details on the alpina forum) but I'm not sure how far that has gone.

Costs for replacing the HG have been quoted around the £2k mark.

Not much. It's a cylinder compression check - if you have the gauge you could diy it. It would take 15 - 30 minutes for a mechanic to complete so depends on their hourly rate - BMW will charge around £80 plus VAT and you get a print out. My latest one shows compression steady and all 6 cylinders around 12.6 bar.

No problem. If you find anything of concern, Phil Crouch is the guy for the copper HG; he's well recommended on the Alpina forum, just search for him plus HG and there will be a few threads!

Be interested to know what your compression readings are per cylinder when you get it done?

If the HG does go, you're supposed to be able to notice it fairly easily as you get rough running and tickover. If it goes, it fails in the 'best' way (if that makes sense) as it goes at the thinnest point between two cylinders so there's no mixing of oil/coolant.

I'm not sure that Phil ever found a copper gasket but I think he started fitting one by ?Cometic? that he sourced from the US that was much cheaper than the OEM gasket
