Taking #308 in for an oil service at Redish Motors in Bristol in a couple of weeks. My first time with them & hoping for good service.[/quote]

Seen very good reviews of them on other forums

TrickyDicky, I agree for an old car or perhaps a car you will never sell and only for yourself. If you try to sell a more expensive car without dealer history the resales value is hammered.

My take- irrespective of make or model, I go for an indy on recommendation. An indy will be far more worried about reputation than a main stealer and you are more likely to get a mechanic that will do what is best for the car rather than a (potential) trainee who is following a procedure to get the car done in his alloted time.

Now I agree with that outlook see because i'V taken mine into Sytners recently for a diagnosis for that weird noise that some get from the steering column and they wanted
me to replace the colmn for £2400. I took it to the guy that does all my servicing and he pinpointed the problem with the steering rack, he greased the rack under the gaitors
and its now better than ever.
But I do understand though what your saying because if I were trying to decide between two cars and one was full BMW I would probably sway to the BMW record I suppose!!

We can agree to disagree on that one. Yes you are correct in a lot of cases. A friend of my brother runs an extremely successful Ferrari maintenance garage, history from his business is held in higher esteem than dealer work - he started the business because he was sick of poor workmanship and value when he had his own cars serviced.

on the last two I've worked on the basis that it has been a shame to have a BMW service history spoiled by an indy stamp for the sake of a 100 quid - however i get it MOT'd at an Indy Performance specialist as i like someone else to have a look at it once in a while.
I can't see that it matters where you get an MOT - it's a standard test, and I've never heard of anyone criticising a car because it's MOTs were done somewhere other than a main agent. In fact I think it's better to use places that only do MOTs as they've no interest in finding 'unnecessary' work to keep their service department busy.

I am only coming from the commercial side, not on the good versus bad discussion. Commercially, it is financial suicide to have an indy stamp in your service book. Secondly, you can write goodwill off completely from BMW for example.

MOT is not part of the service history, nor our tyres, batteries etc. I doubt anyone cares about that.

Agreed thats why I get it done at an Indy - who has a reputation for having a proper look and not flattering the car.

But, in your ///MR sale ad, you still thought it worth mentioning that all your MOTs had been done at the main agent :poke:

Only reason is that if it is done at the dealer, all information is printed on the certificate. I.e all my previous MOT mileage readings are on the same sheet. Guess it shows I am confident that there is nothing hidden if even the dealer can't make more out of it :poke:

You mean you haven't got all your previous MOT certificates for the car? And you expect someone to buy it...?

Only pulling your leg - it's a lovely example

ah yes, remember those adverts with "all tax disks available"
