Alpha N tune and carbon airbox

Hi everyone, hope you all had a good NYE! Now the new year is upon us I want to take my MC to the next level and that means alpha N and csl style airbox. My question is do you think I will notice much difference over my current setup? As I don't really want to throw 3k plus at the car if I can't tell what's been done. Has anyone else been in this position before and if so was it worth it? Thanks and much love, Jon .

You need to speak to Woots. He's had both done (CSL style cf air box from Evolve). I think he saw a 30hp improvement on the dyno.

He's already got cams :o

So with an airbox he will be pushing 400bhp :P

Thanks woots, i am no where near you unfortunately (Peterborough) I know it will make a massive difference on a standard car but I already have a gruppe m and exhaust cams etc... So I don't really think it will make a huge difference? Or am I talking bollox :-)

Well evolve offer a stage 4 pack which has cams exhaust and airbox and makes close to 400hp

The gruppe m will maybe give you 3hp gain and 30% more noise

Evolve intake gave me 30hp and 60% more noise

I think coupled with what you already have you'll have about all you can get out of an n/a car

I'll be in Milton Keynes as of June, so more than happy to meet up

Not quite sure it will give me that much but I would expect 380-390 max. Not about the power though its about how it makes me feel when I drive it. MK is a lot closer Woots so that would be cool. You going to any car shows this year?

Well with the noise believe me it makes a massive difference

The noise for me was a bigger change than having 10% more power

Yeh I plan on attending a few more z4 meets, as well as some sprint days with beedub at coughborough sprint circuit so I'll let u know when I'm around and we can hook up. And yep mk is close so that'll be easier

I have a similar CSL replica airbox running on Alpha-N and love it. Having owned an M3 CSL before, the airbox is one of the things I've missed most about it so I had to get it on the Z4MC. It took a bit of effort to get the ECU re-programmed as there aren't many people with the Siemens ECU experience (including Germany) around. Anyways, got it sorted eventually and it now functions without any issues; idles and runs smoothly (I can't tell the difference from before) and the sound is awesome. The sound is dependent on the accelerator position. If you press it gently when you want to be discrete, it is very quiet but if you floor it, hell breaks loose. :) This is exactly what I've wanted because I don't wan't to drive to supermarket etc. looking like a boy-racer.

The dyno tested power is about 385 PS as I remember (I don't have the chart with me right now). I also didn't think this increase was possible from the S54 engine and it wasn't on M3's. May be the Siemens ECU of the Z4M as opposed to the Bosch ECU of the M3's has something to do with it or the Z4M engines are a bit different (just guessing).

Here is a picture of the airbox:

A video clip of it in the Black Forest. You get an idea about the sound:

Also at top speed. Had the speed limiter removed during re-programming but it still didn'tgo above 275Km/h which corresponded to about 6800 rpm. So, there is still plenty of gearing to go. May be the delimiter is 2 staged and I've unlocked only stage 1 (like the BMW Drivers package on some models). I did not explore further yet.
