Almost caught on fire...

Had some time today, and installed two yellow H11 bulbs for the fog lights, just wanted to to see how it looks. :D

Went for a 30 min drive to pick up dinner, got back to the underground parking lot and wanted to take a quick picture of the fog lights while its still on. I first noticed a very light steam coming off of the headlights, and thought it was water drops evaporating into steam. A second passed, and I realized it wasn't wet outside!!! Quickly glanced down, steam/smoke was fuming from the fog light (the right side)!

Realizing how fast cars burn, I turned off the engine, and desperately tried to open the panel in the wheel well. Thank god the damage wasn't too serious, I was able to disconnect the wire and the bulb (which is now permanently fused with the fog light housing unit). If the wire melted/caught on fire then I'd be posting a very different thread... :(

It all happened so fast, I'm not too sure what the issue was, fog light bulb install is very straight forward. I'm guessing it was defective aftermarket bulb.
Just thought I'd share, should not cheap out on potentially dangerous parts, lesson learned. :headbang:

Does anyone know how to remove the fog light housing? Do I have to take off the whole bumper? And if anyone's selling the right fog light housing (03-05) please PM me.

Sounds like you were lucky in so much as you caught it and damage is limited. Were they the same wattage as the OEM or higher?

The foglight unit is fastened to the inside of the bumper cover so removal is the easiet option. It might be possible to get at it through the service hatch but frankly it takes only a few minutes to take the bumper cover off and then you can propoerly inspect the loom for damage.

:o Scary stuff this is why i am concerned with aftermarket bulbs i was looking at some chrome bulbs for my side repeaters as i had in my last car with no probs may be i'll stick with OEM.

On the other hand I have had aftermarket H11's in my 03 and 06 zeds for years without any problem. Perhaps it was a faulty product, one in a million type of thing? Who knows, glade you and your zed are safe.
