Alloy Wheel Corrosion

Well got my new wheels fitted today and they look great, I just need to try and keep them in good nick, the only bad news was my dealer found a nail in one of my tyres so I'll check the pressure tomorrow to see if it's loosing any air. If it isn't should I just leave the nail where it is as if it gets removed it could then start leaking? I'm not sure if I should take it to my local tyre fitter to check out?

Didnt the delaer notice this before fitting the tyre?

I would ask them to fix FOC, least they can do.

It did seem a bit weird that they left it in unless they noticed after fitting the tyre, I was in a hurry as I needed to be in London in the afternoon to see customers so I didn't really hae time to do anything. It could also be because they didn't like the fact my tyres are Falkens as they other thing that was mentioned was that i had non approved tyres on my car.

I would have thought it to be dangerous to let you leave with a car to have a known and potentially dangerous fault.

They obviously knew about the nail at some point before you collected the car, so would have had time to repair.

It's always difficult to know with nails what to do. I had one in my X5 and as the tyres were nearing end of life just left it in. Clearly by the wear it has also beem in for ages with no detriment In another instance while fitting there was one, but it had not penetrated to the inner, so I removed it.

In most instances, especially with Falkens that are reapirable I'd want it out as it may over time work in deeper and case a flat or damage the cords.

Worst thing of course is to just pull it out on the drive and see what happens as then you're potentially without a tyre.

Took the car into my local fitter and they removed the nail and it then started losing air, the good news was they were able to repair and balance for £20. I was thinking if I had run flats I would have needed to replace the whole tyre as you are not allowed to repair run flats. This was one of the reasons why I decided to go with normal tyres and my decision has now been justified as it would have cost me about £150- £180 to replace a run flat after only just having them replaced a few months ago now that would have been painful.

Well that sounds like a good outcome and 1 up for the Falknens

Can a powder coated wheel be repaired in the same way as a painted wheel if you kerb them as have been told that you have to have the whole wheel coated again but this may be wrong

Update on my situation

Phone call from my dealer at 18:15 tonight which I couldnt take so went to answerphone. The caller advised they had heard back from BMW and to my surprise are going to replace all the wheels. :D

I am surprised as really they are in very good condition. I somehow think the existing ones wont be seeing an angle grinder as was told would happen to them, and somebody will have them away. As said before the corossion is only visible if you remove the wheel.

Just got to decide if I leave in the box and fit some CSL or M6 reps or not.

Result.

Could always swap them with someone else in your area with worse condition 108's with a cash adjustment. OK just kidding, but an  thought....

Frankly I'm sure the dealer will insist on a full change of wheels and swap tyres, so I'd just go with that and be real happy.

you read my mind re the worse set, if only.

congratulations

I'm still waiting for them to decide about mine. I will chase them up tomorrow. Can I ask what age your car is.

It's an Aug06 Build, Registered Dec06 sat at dealer until May07 when I bought it with 51 miles on clock, and now has coming up 20k on it.

Dont you just hate dealers, dropped car off this morning took a call a couple of hours ago to say they will only change three wheels. I have told them it's four or nothing at present, as I am not driving around with odd wheels. The service advisor said the inners looked the same as the existing wheel, but do I trust him? I dont thinkg so. He did say they arent cream on the inners though.

I have told them not to do anything at present and when I collect the car this evening I will look at the new wheels, if they are the same as mine fine proceed and change, otherwise I will kick up a fuss and go to BMW HO if necessary, as I think BMW are being really short sighted in only changing 3 wheels when they are not identical. If they were a 135 style not so bad, but on an open 108 it will be spotted a mile off.

Guess I should have left it till they were in worse condition.
