Alloy refurb

I've had alloys refurbished on a car before and I dropped my wheels off (with the tyres removed) and came back for them a couple of days later and the job was superb but I see there are a lot of mobile refurbishment companies around now. I've got a few nicks on some of the Z4 alloys that I'd like repairing but don't have the luxury of a spare set of wheels so has anyone had experience with any mobile repairers? I assume they just have the spray kit and oven all in the van... I've called a few companies and FYI here is what they said:

Caradon Ltd
Car to be dropped off on-site at £130 for two alloys and takes approximately 48 hours. But usually 24.

Damage Undone Ltd
Car to be dropped off on-site at £110 + VAT for two alloys and takes approximately half a day but usually 3 hours.

Chipsaway
Mobile, requires use of 230V socket. £110 +VAT for two alloys and takes approximately 3 hours.

Re-New Mobile Repairs
Mobile, £140 for two alloys and takes approximately 4 hours.

Oh and its just occurred to me (that I should have asked on the phone), do the mobile repair companies remove your tyres? I can't see how you could get a decent finish without it but its suddenly become a lot of kit to carry around in a van!

Don't think mobile removes tyres, which is a problem in itself as when replacing the tyres, your wheels could easily be damaged again (subject to if the repair is right on the edge of course)

hmmm a local body shop would prob charge £50 or under for a wheel --- its no different to bodywork to be honest

There's probably a difference between a SMART repair and a full refurb, I paid about £50 for an ellipsoid previously (done in a few hours), but as PVR says it can be damaged again by changing the tyre. Have you thought about getting all 4 properly refurbed, would probably be around £260 or so from here http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=459 but probably longer lasting.

Black ellipsoids would look ace

i've not heard good things from several chips away, so it's hit and miss on them i think (unless body work, chip repair which i think they are ok)

had a friend who had 4 wheels refurbed, but chips away, didn't even fill back the wheel kerbings and only smoothed it down and sprayed it with it on the car, so had runs and over brakes etc. very poor for a job of £300+

depends what damage yours is like. as a quick fill, can be good for short period, until it breaks down due to weather or new tyre being fitted.

you could always try a DIY job

Mobile to me always smacks of corner cutting, less equipment/cheaper field versions and the inevitable difficulties of field work. In the instance of wheels - rain, dirt, time, due to need to move to next job rather than allowing paint to dry, etc.

I'd go for a static shop everytime, where they can remove tyres easily, weld, grind, dip, spray, cure paint, or consider eBay and buy a set fully refurbed at not much more than the indicative prices you have. Sell the old one's on and recoup some money. Add £10 per wheel to change tyres, valve and balance while at it. :)
