Alloy Refurb (to split or not to split ?)

Just bought my first Z4 - loving the car (despite the recent weather) Unfortunately it's being let down by the state of the rims - 18" style 108 BBS 5 spokes. From what I've seen the coating bubbling etc. seems to be a common feature on these, despite it being an 08 plate.

Anyway, I've been all over the web for info and cannot find a definitive response :headbang: on whether these can be split or not for refurb (I've found a local chap who says it's not needed, although I would appreciate any opinions on this, esp. from an effective sealing point of view following re-paint ?). Sorry if this has been posted somewhere else before........

Cheers,

Paul

Welcome to the world of Z,s , you found a great forum .
Re your wheel,s ?
Definitely split otherwise whatever you spend will be wasted , can be a nightmare but can come apart easy :? 78 of the 80 bolts may move easy , the last 2 may snap or round off
If you are a hands on chap then they should be within your capabilities or find a place that will do them for you
Once split then powdercoat finish is the way to go with these wheel,s imo , lacquer finishes & 108,s just don,t seem to work especially if your car is a daily driver

If you want some helpful tips on getting them apart PM me or maybe say where you are & sure other,s will forward some choices to have the wheel,s done

Many thanks for the info !

Shearing the bolts was my major concern, but also (assuming they come off ok) was getting the correct re-torque settings - any ideas where I could find these ?

I'm just west of Cambridge CB23 and there are a few places I can try - I guess it's a case of finding someone who really knows what they are doing.

Luckily it's a garaged second car so they won't be seeing any bad weather anymore

Hi mate

i would guess that a majority with 108,s will be running them with paint/lacquer issues due to them being costly or a PITA to refurb .

If you are capable of getting them apart then you are well on the way to the solution , even better if you have a spare set of wheel,s to use temporary as it can be a few weeks if doing them yourself

I had a good phone round a few alloy refurbishers and eventually found one who could do a full split 108 refurb - probably best in the long run and only around £25 extra per corner to have it done properly. Luckily they are fairly close by so I don't have all the aggro of sending wheels off by courrier etc.

I'll let you know how I get on

Paul71 can you let me know the place and the quote pls? (by PM if you prefer). I'm the other side of Cambridge and have the exact same problem.

Does anyone agree that a DIY refurb could work if I just masked around the split and did it in two halves (inner/outer)? I know the bolts will be a total pain to mask up in any case.

Hello mate - just seen your post.

The place I found is http://www.wheelgenie.co.uk and I'm booked in early next month (they are pretty busy) - £415+vat to split & refurb all 4 108's - they've done them before so that gave me some confidence. Only problem is you have to leave the car with them (it's a 2 day job) but mine's a second car so no probs 8).

You could probably do a DIY job just on the front faces but likely it won't last long and may be pain in the *%$"& to get half decent (you need to strip the paint back to bare metal really).

I thought it might be wheel genie - I have used them before and I don't think you will be disapointed. I had some CSL reps done in shadow chrome (on my E46) and they looked great. £500 isn't a bad price considering the work involved).

Decisions decisons......
