Alloy advice.

Going to look at a set of 18 inch mv2 alloys tomorrow. They are 8j all round so not genuine. But that doesn't bother me. What should I check before buying? How do I check for buckles or cracks? Also can I tell if they are good reps etc?

Thanks

Btw I have a 2.0i hence why am only going for 8j all round.

Ask the owner if they are genuine - receipts etc.
A good visual inspection should indicate if they have been looked after (no kerning etc)
Make sure the ET is OK for your Zed
As for buckles difficult without actually putting them on a machine |(wheel balancer) and checking for any run out

Hi folks
Went to look at those alloys and they where badly kerbed which doesn't bother me too much as you can get refurb but they where reps which gain doesn't mind me but it was 2 different sets! The fronts where reps made in Italy which I heard where fine but the others looked different inside and didn't say where they were made, so I take it thu from china or something so I walked away. But for 180 quid what did I expect.

To help me widen my search I was thinkin the following of any one cares to advise. I was wanting to go for 18 or 19 inch 8j all round alloys for I can go for 225 all round. I have a 2.0i so no need for 255 rears. But most geniune mv2 are 8j front and 8.5j rear. Can I buy these alloys and just fit 225 on the rear 8.5j alloys? Or would it be better to fit 235 on 8.5 and 225 on 8j?

Any advice would be great thanks

I personally wouldn't run 225's on a 8.5 due to the elastic band look, aka

225on85.png

and these are 225's on 18 x 8.5m, however Marius is correct to say that there is no reason, apart from taste, not to

It wouldn't affect performance or handling if the back wheels are 8.5j with a 225 wheel.

What would be better, stretch a 225 on a 8.5 or put on a 235?

Also when am looking at alloys they always seem to be in worse condition on the inside around the cente, like slightly corroded or not painted right. Is this normal or should they be in the same condition as the fce?

The inside doesn't usually get such a thorough clean, and the face sits on the hub which in itself gets rusty.

Hi

Guys going to look at A set of alloys tomorrow.

Second hand but have been refurbished and not been put on a car yet. Concerned tho about cracks or buckles. If an alloy is cracked will it be easy to spot and obvious? I can inspect well as there will e no tyres on. They are rep mv2 with 8j all round off a 3 series so everything should be fine and offset shud be too if they for a 3 series. Found it had to read the number beside et on the last alloys I looke at:

Any advice would be great.

Hi..

If you are concerned about cracks: they will be ovious on the inner part of a rim, generally - as that's the relatively weaker part of the rims..

If you are worried about buckles or flat-spots, these are sometimes visible to the naked eye. However: the better way to check, is to take all the rims somewhere independant and ask them to put each of the alloys onto a wheel balancing machine - to ensure they are round; true and straight, - with no buckles or flat spots on the inner or outer parts of each of the rims..

As for, how you can tell if they are good reps'.. Hmm, a difficult one, - but the best of luck in your quest however..

Out of interest, - have they been refurbished and wet painted or fully refurbished and Powder Coated?

Things to check for: decent / new, Centre Caps and decent / new M Badges - both if fitted?

Cheers..

Here are the alloys m looking at. Is it just me or the pic but does there seem to be a few flat spots around the edge of the rims?

Well went to look at the wheels and they look good, well cause the guy had just painted one and showed me the other three which he ha just primed and was about to paint. They aren't orginallys and even says on inside. Et is 40 tho is tht ok?

Actually that's not the main problem on the inside of one of the wheels there is a dent / flatten edge. I take it this is a buckle? Should I just walk away? He wants 200 euro what about 170 quid for the 4 which had all just been painted and seem in good condition other than that buckle on one. What do you all think?

The ET is okay for an e85, but yes walk away it's not worth the risk. Have a look on rimstyle they have an easy pay facility, at least you will be buying new and you will know the provenance.

Argh it's like a couple do hundred difference between cars with 16 or 18 inch alloys :( but looks like I will end up spending a fortune to get a good set of wheels.

Does that rim style do reps like mv2? Or mv4?

Ok saw a set of mv2 genuine one off three series's at 180 but few kerbs marks and has wider rears or a set that ate fom 5 series but are mint at 200. Will the 5 series fit?

This is a good price I think and then I will just put either 225 or 235 on rear. Don't won't to go higher as worried about extra cost on tyres and also my mpg will o down prob too?

Whats your opinion on these? I think a very good price. Tho not sure what they wud be like on my grey z4, to much grey?

Yor thoughts would be great.

There was a forum member who had MV3 fitted to an E85 and they look awesome, I would also suggest you have a look at refurbishing them to shadow chrome.....gorgeous

Thanks

I Saw those pics already. They do look nice just concerned if they grey would clash with having a grey z4?

Those alloys are gun metal grey. Shadow chrome in time lol think I might lower next as am a 2.0 se!

What do ou think of the price for those mv3? I think I good price! Will offer less and see how I go.

Also if I put 225 on 8.5j the will that not effect the Diameter as the wheels stretched, shud I by 225 45 instead of 40 o offset the stretch? Will stretching affecting handling as wouldthisnot weaken the side wall as its not it's natural shape? Would the wider rear decrease my mpg,?

Price is most excellent, when I purchased my 18" BBS wheels I looked at loads of MV3's on eBay, couldn't get a set for less than £600

Not to sure about the grey on grey tho.

But going to look at them tomorrow and think I I can get them down as the guy said e looking about 250.

Not very many opinions on this forum about these alloys, maybe they don't like them.
