All my power has gone! Is my car dying?

I drive it out if work the other night, and got my foot down but the car had no power, I put my foot down a little more and it seemed to go in to limp mode. I turned it off and started it up again and it seemed ok, tho I very gently drove it home.

Today it went in for mot and failed on emissions. They say it's the Vanos, which is The crank timing. Tho I thoughttthe Vanos was the valves? Has anyone had an experience like this before or had to change the Vanos? I've no idea how much they cost etc. I need the car to pass it's mot in a fewdays or its sorn off the road. So panic king a bit.

The idle is terrible, could it be the crank timing or Vanos? I've no idea. Help desperately needed.

Thanks.

The vanos might need a new seal kit I think it's cheap but takes about 4 hours. The idle might just be due to the limp mode have you got any of the error codes? I just replace the throttle body on mine it ran really rough it was a p1633 code.

Hi Could be a number of things including crank sensor.
You really need some fault codes and some more data to diagnose. A reputable motor mechanic or independent (Indy) will do this without ripping you off.
Speak to some one to recommend a good garage in the Grimsby area that wants your business.

I got it diagnostic checked. And that came back an sp12 code or something. They tol. Me too much air getting in and ccould be a split hose. But when it went in for mot I got told Vanos. I'll take it to a garage tomorrow and see how I go. Thanks again.

This is a double post by wrongboy He has asked the same question twice.
As MM and I have said he needs more data/fault codes to diagnose.
Can any body recommend a reputable garage/Indy in Grimbsy?

Take to a garage that wants your business long term ........not familiar with SP12 as afault code.

nope its a 3.0ltr. had some word back yesterday about it showing fault codes for: mas air flow/throttle valve hot film sensor/torque limitation/and other two was "air lak" related. i asked the mechanic for the actual codes, but he didnt say he logged it. he also said it would need smoke testing.

I searched the internet for a solution and found to try the maf sensor. so i unplugged it and took it for a quick spin round the block. seemed loads better. so i took out the maf and gave it a good clean and popped it back in. then the car was running like s**t again. could it all just be down to the maf sensor?

thats the cheapest place i can find them: http://www.maf-shop.com/index.php/cat/c8_BMW.html?gclid=CKTj6f-uw7kCFSGWtAod8lwAuA

but which one do i need for a 2004 3.0 z4? bmw quoted me £312 with 10 days delivery from germany. :headbang:

Could be a number of things, so why don't you just take it to your local BMW dealer to get it diagnosed if you don't know or cant trust a local indy. At least you'll know what the issue is and can choose what to do and where to do it from there.

Some indy's near you, found on the magic that is Google...

yeah its already booked into simon thorpe on friday. but its going to end up sorn by then. what are the odds of it going wrong the day before its mot and tax are due. so anoying.

Ok, before you blow as gasket (& your wallet) trying to change everything, check the rubber intake pipe just below the DISA valve housing. Follow the big drain-pipe sized rubber pipe from the air filter housing (left side at the front) to the manifold. Where it goes into the manifold you'll find a junction where it goes off towards the rear of the engine. Mine has a few small splits which don't appear to be affecting running (yet). Yours may have more serious splits which will allow air into the manifold upstream of the metered air. This will affect things as the motor will be running lean. The new part is only £25 from the dealer. Check this before you get into big bucks.

The VANOS (variable cam timing) can wear, especially if the oil isn't changed regularly (blame condition based servicing). There are also small filters inside that never get changed. If the VANOS mechanism is noisy then investigate Mr Vanos (http://www.mrvanos.com) in Darlington who can rebuild for a lot less than buying a new set.

Is the car taking a little longer to catch when started? It could be the cam sensor. General opinion says don't bother with aftermarkey tat, get a genuine BMW sensor & save having to do the job twice. It's not a hard diy job but you will probably need the fault code cleared afterwards.

As previous posts - get it to a specialist with Autologic to read the fault codes. It will pin the problem down straight off & take away the guess work.

ok, so just got word back from http://bmwspecialistgrimsby.co.uk and they say that the smoke test came back with no leaks, and that they think its the maf sensor (the same as i did a few days ago) which one in the link is for my z4? im worried about buying the wrong one and really dont want to screw it up. thanks.
