My brother, who’s a total PH, has just bought his first electric Porsche.

As has been mentioned this all eclectic idea is stupid, the filthy industry needed to produce the batteries along with their very limited life span and horrendously dirty disposal process is conveniently swept under the carpet for a sterile whiter than white marketable image.

Hydrogen is the future just like fusion yet the govs of the world are too fking stupid to invest the money needed to push the technology along :headbang:

There is actually a lot of UK Government and EU impetuous in Hydrogen but while it’s been around, like forever, the actual mechanics are highly complicated and we are just starting to work on the BS EN standards for high pressure applications for large scale applications. There is so much work to do but we might be getting there by 2029.

Fingers crossed that the proposed manufacture of synthetic fuels may reduce the need to go all electric by 2030.

You don't even need to buy a new car - pretty sure our governments won't like it though.

Forget the all electric will save the world - the biggest pollutants by far are 2nd hand cars sold off to Africa, S America & other developing countries when they’re at the end of their useful life in the west... plus all the dirty industries just dumping their waste.

I really feel it’s all about paying lip service to the cause & having an excuse to pat each other on the back to say how wonderful they’ve been... :headbang:

I really can’t see how the infrastructure will be in place by then, and even if it is, do you want to wait 2 hrs to fill the battery on the motorway services...? We obvs have to look after the planet, so personally I’m at odds...

If more of us got around on these it would help, 95mpg 8)

the power comes from an electricity network that is still very heavily reliant on.......fossil fuel.

That isn't really the case nowadays though is it. Looking at the below graph, renewables overtook fossil (primarily natural gas) for the first time. The other important thing to consider is that once you get the end user away from fossil it's comparatively much easier to change how that energy is generated.

I hope I'm not beginning to sound like an advocate of an all electric vehicle future here. The very thought of it makes my petrol-headed brain incredibly sad!!!

All of the above is presuming we use the "current technology" for replacing fossil fuelled transport. That is Lithium Ion batteries and Hydrogen.

From what I know of hydrogen, this won't really ever make it to cars (maybe for a very short transition period) due to potential safety issues.

The big companies are ploughing billions into perfecting hydrogen heating appliances at present, ie boilers and the like, but the infrastructure for natural gas lines to be retrofitted to accommodate it needs to be in place.

I saw a news piece a while ago regarding the use of graphite (pencil lead) sliced very thinly being a superb solar collector of electricary. They were trying to perfect the implementation of this into car paint, so the external skin of your car will be a solar panel. That could be the way ahead.

As far as petrol is concerned in the interim period from let's say 2030 to 2060(?), the problem I can see is how much will it cost? If you go from producing 50,000 barrels a day to 5, who is going to want to bother? Maybe we will have artisan "micro-oilwells"? Probably deilvered by Amazon! :D

Petrol is a product of oil refinery, a process that is required for other life essentials other than fuelling our Zeds
The roads our so called ultra-clean EV’s use are generally running on Tarmac, I’m not aware of any other road surface that is a common or useable, maybe concrete but that isn’t exactly green is it, nor is it as common or as cost effective, therefore refining of oil will continue and by-products such as petrol and diesel will be used for what???

If all the worlds deranged Greta’s are buying electric cars maybe the price of Petrol will drop due to other refinery by-products that need to be used up.

This EV evolution is BS is not very well thought out IMO :tumbleweed:

I agree with improving the environment but the major impact is us – people with population continuing to grow and continuing to harm the planet – sorry but population control is the answer and the planet wont reverse the degrading effects until we admit it. :poke:

Meanwhile – I’ve been buying petrol in mass volumes and stockpiling just in case it gets stopped. I store it in my Zeds petrol tank. Problem is though, I keep loosing it

Not really life essentials, maybe life "conveniences". I think you can get quite a few carpets, plastic food wrappers and the like from a litre of crude. You can only get 5-10 miles on the same once refined.

This thread is quite funny really if you think about it. Our great grandchildren won't have a clue what an internal combustion engine was and won't care. They will be raised on different technology and will probably laugh at how noisy, smelly and inefficient a V8 was :(

Maybe it’ll spawn Amish style Petrol Head communities who’ll want to keep ‘the old ways’...
