All electric by 2030

So if this is the big plan what will happen to petrol/diesel new car prices in the few years before 2030?
For instance, £100,000 cars, who is going to buy them when a few years later they will be almost worthless.

The ban is for the sale of NEW unregistered petrol or diesel cars from 2030, excluding hybrids that have a defined range of electric only until 2035. So used cars can still be sold after this date.

I really can’t see how the infrastructure will be in place by then, and even if it is, do you want to wait 2 hrs to fill the battery on the motorway services...? We obvs have to look after the planet, so personally I’m at odds...

If more of us got around on these it would help, 95mpg 8)

Yes but who will buy £100k cars in 2029?
Or what sort of discounts will there be on cars at this pricepoint?

Lets just say that the infrastructure will magically be there. Surely there wont be a queue of people wanting expensive petrol/diesel cars in 2029.

Bikes will be screwed, we will all be on twist and go electric scooters

meh, think ill mostly be seeing out my driving days in fossil fuelled vehicles, most cars I buy are usually around 5-10 years old so my first electric may be between 2035 and 2040, that'll be me retired and living somewhere warm hopefully and ill just need a cheap electric runabout for the odd trip out to find a rare petrol station with a load of jerry cans to fill up my real car :D

Even if it is I'll just run older cars with an ICE - like many of us on here do now!

The future is really quite exciting, hydrogen as an energy source is the next big thing from fuel cells in cars, vans, lorries and buses to adding it to natural gas for domestic heating. Thus it’s not just electric cars with big batteries, it’s so much more and I see the larger service stations producing and storing their own hydrogen with on site electrollysers.

Dont you think we will be forced to change by fuel prices rising until its unaffordable.

Even though new fossil fuelled cars will be phased out its going be decades before we see any big reduction in their use and demand for petrol/diesel will still be there for a long time.

More to the point I just can't see how enough electricity can be generated if there was a big sudden uptake with electric cars, look at the USA recently having blackouts because their so called renewable energy couldn't cope with demand :)

I still think hydrogen is the way to go.

Tim.

The same people who buy them now, take a Porsche 911, you won’t be able to buy a petrol only version in the UK in 2030, so you’d get it delivered and registered in last week of December 2029, and then how much more will it be worth in January 2030 when you can’t actually buy one anymore. Used sports car prices I expect will surge in 2030, where part of the enjoyement of driving it comes from the sound of the engine, a Chelsea tractor on the other hand perhaps not so much demand used

You have chosen a 911 but there are many many run of the mill £100k cars that depreciate badly right now.
What about these types of cars?
Say an X5 or X6 thats around £100k new. Who will go into a showroom in 2029 and buy one with the knowledge that even if they keep it for 5 years it will be worth practically nothing. Will vehicle tax rise to a level where people will not want to pay. Where will the incentive be to buy something like this.
I dont agree that the same people who buy them now will still buy them in 2029.

I don't see that happening for a few years, and seeing as I'll be in my 70s by then I probably won't care!

No the tank will be quite small with Hydrogen compressed to 600 bar (that’s practically the same pressure at a depth of 6 km under the sea) :o

Explain why you feel it will be worth nothing after five years? There’s no incentive to tax them to death as the government needs people to buy fuel for the revenue.
