Alcantara - anyone done a DIY job?

I'd love to get my steering wheel and dash trimmed in alcantara.

I've been quoted between £500 - £600 parts and labour for the dashboard (top and bottom) and doors which seems reasonable.

Steering wheel in itself is closer to £400 though and as my girlfriend is a dab hand at knitting so maybe I could always persuade her, but it needs to be less than impossible for a non expert to do! Anyone tried this?

£400 for the steering wheel!!! You can get a seat done for that much! The steering wheel should only need just over a metre's length & 4 inches width of alcantara (or about £50 max for material).

Alexman, you're gonna get your girlfriend to knit you a steering wheel in alcantara. Or did I not read that right :)

Yes, girlfriend to knit steering wheel *cover* !

Anyway, I might make this into a bit of a project while I mull over an upgrade (may very well keep me occupied from spending much more money)...

Shopped around and first quote for Alcantara off the reel was £130 per metre (a roll width is 1.4m). Managed to get a quote for £40 per metre plus VAT (!). Great stuff. So I might get a few metres to do the doors, upper dash, lower dash and some of the centre console. Just the labour required now.

Has anyone tried trimming this stuff to fit doors (the easiest part) ?
