Alarming rattle!

Just picked up car from having a bit of paintwork done. Car been standing or only moved short distances for about 4 days. When she started there was an alarming kind of cam follower rattle. Took about 2 miles before it disappeared. Never done it before and been fine since. Should I be concerned or is it perhaps dodgy oil. Not due oil service yet! :(

I have noticed the same thing after the car has been started for a number of very quick startups (not driven) and then let sit for a while. I think I have read about it somewhere else on this forum or ZPost and it is some what normal and has to due with oil draining from the oil valve adjusters. This is the only time I get the ticks :D ,never on cold startup just this way.
It is sort of related to the Tick issue with the N52 motor but only shows up in this pictular situitation.
Anyone else comment.

That's very reassuring thankyou. Nothing worse than suddenly hearing noises you've never experienced before :o

I agree nothing strikes fear like a new unexplained sound or vibration. :driving: I first heard this the very first time I got in the car after it had been shipped to Toronto from Vancover BC by train, and had been worried about the ticking issue on the car I had bought sight unseen. But I had remembered reading about this situitation and quickly figured that the car had probably been started and moved short distances not allowing it to warm properly during shipping. And like you said after a few miles it disappeared and I have only heard it a couple of times all in a similar situitation.

I always find this fascinating and brilliant that a problem I have in England can be diagnosed by a fellow Z4 er in another part of the world...Isnt that just fantastic. Many thanks ctrl-z hope the weather in Canada is as lovely as here in England, We've got lovely roof-down sun at the moment!

We are indeed having a awesome spring, one of the best in years. Top down and a big smile on my face.

Hi srhutch. No mines a 2003 model. Done loads of miles since nothing heard! Used to get the same prob on my Westfield zetec but used fully synthetic Mobil 1 and that went away. Haven't checked yet what is the best oil for my car.

Glad to hear the weather is good over in Canada. I used to go to Montreal for the GP every year and it was mostly gorgeous then! :D

At least you don't have to worry about HVA's then
