Alarm/Immob - Insurance question

Well, just getting all the ducks in a row before collecting my first M.

What is the standard fit security on an M? Is there a BMW alarm/immobiliser? Is it Thatcham approved. I know there is no tracker on the car at this point.

Any clues? I would ask the current owner, but he is away for the weekend so he wont really want me hounding him with questions! :)

Are you sure it has no tracker. Mine wasn't advertised with one, but a quick call to tracker confirmed it has got one.

i'll check when ive collected the car.

i've insured it already now - on esure it made no difference to my price whatsoever if i put "no security" or "manufacturer alarm and immobiliser", so i just put none, to get the policy, and then i will phone up when i know whats actually fitted. It was also cheaper to park on the drive than in the garage.... :o that aint happening though, its going in the garage!

Just realised the car your buying  can probably be assured it hasnt then considering its only one owner.

Apparently lots of accidental damage happens to cars in garages - so even though it is more secure the insurance is higher :headbang:

Mine officially lives on the drive. If it is in the garage and I drop something on it I would not claim anyway, just get someone to fix it...

It's two things. Firstly, a lot of damage happens to cars whilst on their way into (or out of) owners' garages. And also that more desirable cars and more likely to be garaged - and more desirable cars are more likely to be stolen.

Its better not to state that cars are garaged - even of there is a discount - because there is usually a clause which is then activated which means that if a car is stolen / vandalised at your home address and the car was not garaged at the time, either (a) they won't pay out or (b) they will impose an enormous excess. Always have mine noted as kept on the driveway, and then garage it anyway...

Yup. This.

THis is not true of all insurance companies though, my current insurance policy states the car must be garaged if located within one mile of my home between 10pm and 6am

I presume that you must have said that your car was garaged, otherwise that standard garaging clause would not be in effect... unless your insurers is one who only insurers garaged cars.... I was more trying to point out what happens when your policy contains that clause and then you don't abide by it

My logic exactly +1.

I would have told them I garage it like any other company when getting a quote.. It's a classic car policy so guess this affects things.

Yeah. A lot of classic policies only cover garaged cars...
