Alarm bonnet switch - Stealer rip off

All,

I have just spoken to my local BMW dealer to order an alarm bonnet sensor to find that BMW have superseded the part and the new one costs £35 rather than the old version at £10. Has anyone else come across this and found an alternative, or do I just need to bite the bullet and pay the inflated price ?

Just take it out and don't replace its pointless anyway.

That's what I did when it failed on my last Z and I'd do the same again when it inevitably fails on my new Z
 
Good point and certainly an option. I do like to keep it all in working order though, so if there is a reasonable price switch available elsewhere, then I woudl go for that.

Just search on eBay for 'bmw alarm bonnet switch'

IIRC, the same switch was fitted to lots of other models including the E46

eBay only seems to have second hand ones or the new one from the USA.

Is the E46 version definitely compatible (as it has a different part number) ?

Sorry, can't be 100% on that - I have a recollection of being told that the same switch was used in lots of different models, just with different mounting brackets

Do you know someone with another BMW of around the same era so that you could compare the switches?
 
There is also the option of dismantling the old switch stretching the spring back out and then reassembling it... I know a few people have done that so gave it a go myself but when I tried I ripped the switch to pieces made a mess of it gave up and didn't bother replacing...

You may have more luck than me and its definitely worth a go before you buy a replacement
 
the switch isnt always repairable. On the peg that goes up and down there is (inside) a very small notch that gradually wears away (the switch is very sensitive).
You cant repair that wear.
