Aircon

Heard an advert on radio for aircon regassing etc saying "if we cant better it by 10% your money back",so my question is what is the as new acceptable fully cold aircon temp.

That's a bloody good question - I have no idea :?

However I am wary of just re-gassing as it can simply mask other problems. You should really have the system services every two years - so they clean / change the filters, check / change the seals AND re-gas it IIRC. I am booking Mrs Bs in to be done next week. Costs about £70 I think, but worth it.

Surely they don't have to get it 10% better than new, just 10% better than it currently is.

Mine's switched on all year round (when the car is running of course), and I just get a BMW refresh/service/regas every couple of years for about £80 IIRC.

Re-gassing as part of a regular preventative maintenance routine is fine, but you shouldn't notice any difference. You only feel good because you know your are treating your car with care. If you notice a difference, there is a leak that needs to be repaired, re-gassing alone is an insufficient measure.

Just to update this...

In the latest 'heatwave' I've realised my air-con is not as cold as it used to be (i.e. it used to blow out 'steam' like when you open a freezer door).

So I've had a look around and one of my local dealers are offering a 'special offer' of £95 for a service/freshen/regas. Even some dealers on the same franchise are confusing me - one has it for £79 incl. VAT, the other £79 plus VAT - which they claim is a £100 saving!

However some less local dealers are offering the same service for £69 and not claiming that it's a discounted price at all.

Is it just me, or is this variance annoying to anyone else? I don't mean the actual price, as I think £100 is fine for a regas & service, but the random difference between a £69 one and a 'full price' £190 one at a dealer in the same network?

you dont need aircon so much when you put the roof down???

oh no wait.. :|

Look up BOSCH centres on tinternet and your local 1 will be doing a regas for around £50. Anyone that pays a main stealer for a regas has either too much money or a company car.

BOSCH make the machines that do the regas so no point in paying more anywhere else.
