Aircon auto ?

When i press auto on then set temp about 23 degree all is good.
But if i do the same with aircon on it blows cold.
I would have thought the aircon would not blow cold unless the car inside is hotter than set temp ?
I needed aircon to keep windows clear today in heavy rain but the aircon was blowing cold outside 15 degree inside set at 23 ?
So i winter if you use aircon to clear windows it blows cold ?

I believe in all BMWs, if you have the climate control selected to Auto, but then turn on the AC; the AC will override the Auto function.

Having said that I’ve never felt the need to turn on AC if my Auto is set to 20 or above.

I have mine on auto (& AC on) all the time. Set the temperature and forget it. If it's blowing a bit cold, use the red/blue thumbwheel next to the vents to 'fine tune' the air that's blowing at face vent level. Works a treat! :)

As far as Auto is concerned, my understanding is that this is where the air blows and how fast - the temp (& AC) settings determine the temp that it blows at.

There is a seal around the Aircon pump than is very likely to dry out if not regularly lubricated... & then the Aircon will slowly deteriorate.

Generally accepted wisdom (in a Tintop) is to leave the climate function on all year round, both for lubrication & to clear dampness as mentioned above during winter months... even if it does mean using a little more fuel

Not true, In my old E46 and my current 2016 F20 1 series you just set the temperature leave it on auto with A/C on it regulates the temperature automatically. However in my 2009 Z4 I find it working the same as the OP and I have to turn it up all the way to around 26 to 28º to get the temp to what should be around 22º, not sure if there is some kind of fault. On another note it is recommendable to use the air con at least once or twice each month otherwise the seals will dry out and the air con will cause problems.

Just used in wifes fiat 500.
With the heater set to medium ish and aircon on it blows out heated conditioned air.
To warm car and stops windows fogging up like you need in winter.
But in z4 it blows out cold conditioned air with temp set to 23 outside 16.
I will try setting at 26 in that situation.
Still sussing what that dial in centre of vents does in relation to auto temp setting.

According to the manual the dial between the centre vents is: “Thumbwheel for adjusting the amount of
cool air from the vents to the upper body area. This can be used to adjust the air temperature for the upper body area.”

However, my E89 has the same problem as others on this thread. Unless I turn the temperature to maximum in air coming out of the vents feels cool and I can hardly say it is hot on maximum. When it was in my Indy for a service I asked him to check it and he could find nothing wrong with it! On the other hand I am now in France where temperatures have been very high and the air conditioning works very well with top up or down. I did have the gas replaced before I left the UK.

Thanks silverstar.
So that red blue dial on dash is seporate to auto temp.

Yes correct it is separate to auto setting and it is to regulate how much hot or cold air comes out of the face level vents. I used it mainly in the winter (when I was in the UK) when you'd have the heating on full (e.g to the feet) but you wanted a slightly cooler air to the face / head level.

I didn't think about it but I suppose you can use it the other way around and set it to warmer air flow for the face level vents with the air con on and auto temp set to 20 or 22º. I'll try it out when I am next in the car.

Strange to me with a bmw that you dont just set temp.put aircon on press auto .
You put aircon on and thats goes out the window and you just get cold with no temp control.
My other cars with climate did,nt work like that.

I think The red/blue thumbwheel works the same as in my old E39.

In the red position it just obeys the auto temp setting on the master dial; however, the blue setting allows you to manually override the system and get a blast of cool air in your face. I think the idea is that if your on a long drive or feeling a bit tired it's a good idea to blast yourself with a bit of cool air instantly with just the flick of the wheel. I leave mine in the red unless I feel stuffy and need the instant cold air.

Nah. On my E89 I leave AC & Auto on all the time, winter & summer, sun & shade, wet & dry, top up & down.
The climate control just mixes the heater & AC air or heater & external air to try to set the interior air to whatever you have selected. It’ll try to do that as quick as possible. If you set it to 22c, it’s 19c outside and daytime then it’s likely to be above 22c in the car so it’ll blow cold to cool to 22 quickly. It’ll do the same thing with AC off but won’t be as noticeable as the blower air won’t be as cold. As soon as it is 22c in the car it’ll stop blowing so cold, just give it a chance to equalise.

Also there's a light sensor on the dashboard, which means that if it's a sunny day it'll take the heating effect of the sun into account in the cabin and blow cooler..

I find it annoying that the blower always comes on o fan setting one when i turn the car on....can you set it to always be off until you turn it on?
