Aircon and fan problem?

Can't see an immediate thread of help so....help!

Blower is only working at slowest speed and aircon button (The Mr Frosty button) doesn't illuminate. I'm not 100% clear if aircon is actually working but if I press the AUTO button it does seem to dehumidify windscreen. Its all getting hot ok but just not wanting to run at anything but dead slow fan speed :(

I'm about to go and check fuses but does anyone know if I'm looking for multiple issues or would a single fuse cover both somehow? I just can't currently see the logic that would stop the fan working at all speeds just because aircon had failed for some reason? And I'm only suspecting electrical gremlins at this stage (he said optimistically!).

Any experiences?

Could be the final stage resister (The Hedgehog) although I don't think I have heard about it going on the Z4, but a common issue on the E46 and E39 I believe.

Have you had a flat battery or replaced the it? I had these exact symtoms after changing the battery which had gone flat. Turned out the car had put itself into transport mode, dealer fixed it in 20 mins by "coding the car to the battery". Otherwise probably what srhutch suggests.

It went flat while parked up for six months :(

Thanks for the input Nick.....can't be arsed to drive 40 miles to Swansea so might have to do some digging and see if theres a way round it somehow....I mean how BMW is that, coding the car to the battery!! :headbang:

EDIT: Useful thread here.....damn, looks like a trip to the stealers after all.

similar thing happened on a friends A4 - aircon light would not come on - was due to the fact there was insufficient refrigerant in the system for the aircon to work due to a leak from the radiator - could be that you too have lost your refrigerant?

One way of seeing if the aircon is working is feeling the pipes as they come out of the aircon compressor - should be a temperature differential of ones going in and ones coming out. Also you should hear the aircon clutch engage (click) and the radiator fan start if you switch it on while idling

well i'm hoping its this 'transport mode' issue TBH DrNick - hopefully a cheaper option! I'll report back when I've visited the stealer :(

Doubt it the same problem as the A4 as the fan isn't working either, I think as above it's in Transport mode now.

Seems im starting to learn stuff about my Zed :D , I came across this thread a while back , Darkmans comment at the end of the thread may be relevent to lacroupades problems ,,,,,,,,, it helps if I post the link http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=195

Yep spot on....exactly my symptoms.

One slightly weird thing though.... I pulled the two fuses (one at a time) for the aircon and then the rear screen to check they were intact, and when the latter came out the engine cut out...? :o

But the implication is this is going to happen every time anyone buys a new battery? :headbang:

Well the jolly stealer confirms the diagnosis so thanks to you all for pointing me in the right direction.

So now its an 80-mile round trip to Swansea and £37+VAT :headbang:

So if you're swapping your battery for a new one I'd suggest connecting the new one first with jump leads - thats unless theres a time-out to this, I'll ask in the garage when I go...unless anyone knows? I can't believe that this happens every time you need to disconnect the battery?

No, it does not. I have had the battery out loads of times.

I can only imagine that your battery has been dead / disconnected for a very long time rather then just a couple of hours.

Ah thanks for that - I was expecting more grief when I swap the battery! I suspected it was the long, slow decline into deadness that was the culprit rather than disconnection per se.

Encouraging to know this is just another Z4 (!) lesson I have to pay for!

Had the same on mine last winter, I argued the point with the Dealer and said it was unacceptable for this happen just because the battery went flat or low, they rescinded the bill after a bit of loud conversation and me showing my discontentment. I keep it on a optimiser now when in the garage over winter of when I'm on holiday so it doesn't happen again.

Hope this is useful

What make did you buy darkman, been thinking about this for a while now....

a CTEK XS800 will do the trick, and as above with PVR have disconnected the battery many times without issue, and also flat battery twice without any issues.

Changed my battery - no problem!
How many have disconnected the battery to carry out steering wheel mods and no reported problems.....

I see you've gone over to the dark side then! Congrats :)

I'll be quizzing the BMW teknishun closely to try and find out what the root cause is.....
