Airbag warning light

Hi,

I took my car for a quick trip on Sunday to the big Tescos near me since the weather was so nice (I don't get the chance to drive it much) and after about 2 minutes when I realised Tescos on a Sunny Sunday afternoon was hell on earth I jumped back in and drove off however I noticed the air bag warning light wasn't going off this time?

It is down to a faulty airbag or something and how much does this cost to fix? Also can I just reset something and and get rid of it?

Sometimes they can just be reset, however whilst it is on, be aware that all your airbags are disabled until the fault light is reset.

Try a reset at a local independent first, but it's usually a sign of either a passenger sensor mat fail or a side airbag control module fail.

Sadly, both are about £400 to fix.

okay I'll drive carefully :driving:

ouch 400 notes.... :headbang:

I assume the reset cant be done with a stand on one leg, turn the ignition key to potion one then think of a number type thing?

Few indies or dealer only to track cause and reset.
Reset £50, but as said above a fault caused it

Did you stand on the passenger seat or do some DIY involving disconnecting some circuit such as the drivers seat?

no hadn't touched it, as drove to Tesco's and back, hadn't used the car for about a week before that when I vacuumed the seats and carpets, would that set it off?

Then I can only suggest a specialist Indy that can read and reset airbags or BMW (read expensive)

You need to test the system to find out what is broken, be that loom, connector, airbag, etc.

The system does not trip for no reason and unless you can get it reset for free, then it's likely to come on again in seconds or days and be a waste if time and money.

I understand that it's usually a faulty pressure mat.
There is a guy in Florida on ebay that is selling a $23 pressure mat simulator to solve the passenger airbag lights always on problem. Here :-
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-Airbag-L...item1e629c1810
This seems to work on cars up to 2005 where there was a separate two-wire mat control module . On 2006 onward Z4s there is no separate control module and the mat is connected by three wires but the guy claims that two of his simulators hardwired in will turn the light off and has sent me a wiring diagram. Have any forum members with 2006 and later models tried this solution and did it work ?

Beware of these modules, they can only work in one of 2 ways,

1 - It fools the circuit to think that a passenger is never there, so the passenger airbag will never go off in the event of an accident, you wont need to worry though if you are the driver... Just hope your passenger is not someone you care about.

2 - It fools the circuit to think that a passenger is always there, so you will have to have the seatbelt permanently plugged in,
and the passenger airbag will always go off even when the seat was unoccupied, so just hope that the insurance assessor doesnt put 2 and 2 together for a non-declared modification that has caused the dash to also be destroyed.

If in doubt phone your insurance and tell them you are thinking of modifying a safety system. see what they say.

Well stated. BMW have us over a barrel on this. I wonder if replacing the mat is a DIY job ? I can find good postings on removing the seat but nothing on actually replacing the mat.
