Airbag warning light. Help please

Hi all,

My airbag light has been on for a good year now and I could do with some advise from the pros if possible?

The car is a 2003 e85 3.0i with M-Sport heated leather seat fitted by the previous owner. The airbag light came on around 2 years after I bought it. Today I decided to work out what the fault is.

INPA tells me there is no fault but DIS is more specific and has told me that the 9895 SBSL is currently present which is 'seat occupancy detector, passenger, communication fault'.

I took the seat out today and found that the occupancy sensor looks like it already has bypass modification fitted by the previous owner. So would this fault be the bypass or the occupancy sensor becoming faulty during my ownership?

I'd like to order the correct part to get it sorted and then clear the fault in DIS so I can pass my MOT next week 👍🏼

Good chance that bypass unit has failed. It is a resistor that reports back to the airbag module, if that sees the expected resistance it passes the test and if all is well with the rest of the system components the dash light remains off. Once the fault is fixed the code will need to be deleted with a scanner and the light should go off.

While I wait for the new bypass plug to arrive, I remember reading on here that someone coded out the occupancy sensor completely using NCS Expert - this sounds like a better solution. I have INPA, NCS Expert, DIS and BMW Scanner 1.4, the latter also does coding on many ECU modules APART from the SRS ECU, which for some reason is greyed out - damn it.

Can anyone confirm that they have indeed coded out the occupancy sensor using NCS Expert before I waste more time researching?

Thanks

I seem to recall that it can be coded to 'nicht aktiv' using NCS Expert but you have to get your head around the proceedure for using NCS Expert and NCS Dummy that translates the german to english.

Other Youtube videos also available explaining NSC Expert, the guy in the link posted is a bit quick and working on an E60 but principle will be the same for the Z4.
Here is another one on an E46 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JDos0jyTPE
