Airbag Light

I have an airbag light on. I initially found a DTC code for the STVR. I bought a used STVR and installed. Those initial codes went away and now all I have is the airbag light on and a VIN mismatch for that STVR. Everything else is clear, no codes.

Any idea how to reprogram the VIN in that part (STVR)? I have seen some threads on it but they are confusing to me. I don’t like software and laptop issues/tasks. I’d rather do mechanical work, but, this may be the time for me to learn some of the software changes such as this VIN change.

Thanks in advance

There are several guides on here that lead you through the stages of recoding using inpa, winkfp, ncs and toolset32

If you can’t find by searching shout up someone will post a link

You’ll need a laptop with all the software on it and a good dcan cable

Location? Someone may be close who can assist

I found my 2003 Z4 had the passenger side drain plugged and water had entered behind the passenger seat after a couple days of heavy rain. Of course the air bag light was on. So out came the interior so I could dry the carpets.

My Foxwell code reader found tons of codes on all the airbag related modules. Only the B-Pillar on the right side had been in contact with water. They wouldn’t clear, most related to communication problems. I disconnected the battery and pulled the right side module. I dissembled the unit and it had tons of corrosion on the circuit board and on the connectors. I assumed I would be replacing and learning how to code the replacement.

With nothing to lose I cleaned the circuit board wth WD40 and a fine nylon brush. Then I used compressed air to blow the board clean. It looked great, no discoloration could be seen and none of the components showed burn marks. I reinstalled the unit and powered up. I went through and cleared all the existing codes and this time they didn’t come back, except of one. It was “93E6 SIM: Signal lamp, airbag deactivation: open circuit”. When I clear this code the Airbag light goes off for a couple seconds but then it comes back on.

I need to do some more research in order to troubleshoot this code but I think I was able to save the water soaked module.

I found that the “93E6 SIM: Signal lamp, airbag deactivation: open circuit” was because I had failed to reconnect the “PASS AIR BAG OFF” indicator lamp when I reinstalled the center console. BTW it has a blue connector with two wires connected to it.

Now my air bag light is off and all my errors are cleared.

So try cleaning your corroded air bag modules before you replace it. It worked for me!
