Airbag light on - Have you been affected? (UK)

Another question :-)

The airbag light is the red one in the dashboard (next to the seatbelt light). I read some people talking about a different one... I don't think I have another one in my car. Is this one (red, console, next to seatbelt) the one which one can reset with inpa?

yea that cable will work fine. the airbag light is a person sitting down with a pillow infront of them. have a look in your owners manual to confirm. inpa is easy to install on any windows laptop. only takes 5-10 min on my win7 64 bit. will let you read the error and clear it if its not a major problem. if u need any help, PM me and il walk u through

My airbag light came on yesterday when I was driving along for no particular reason. I am going to take it in today and get it reset if possible.

Right, just had the fault reset, it was the driver's side seatbelt buckle fault apparently. it came back on within 20mins! :headbang: Any idea's??

Managed to sort my airbag light out with a cable off ebay and INPA :-). Total cost under 30 quid. If anyone needs help drop me a message!

My light came on a week ago and I got it checked out today.

It came up with the fault code of a drivers seat belt pre tensioner earth fault. The mechanic ha a play about under the seat and the light went off, so he reset the light. He then moved the car outside and the light came back on and the fault code was then a drivers side seat belt anchor.

Are these expensive to replace?

Cheers

After spending 3 weeks in the garage and having the dash taken out twice to replace wiring I had been airbag light free for 3 weeks then on Friday it came back on . Looks like more time without the car :( . Glad i'm not paying

I ought to try and get mine fixed......it's been on ever since I bought the car and I've covered it up with a piece of tape :P

Will this reader be compatible ?

just found out that car MOT's are starting to be brought in line with commercial lorry MOT's. i.e. much much much stricter. this basically means that any warning lights on your dash = automatic failure.

my airbag light has been out for the last year or so, i heard that it was due to a faulty sensor which is quite a common problem with spring loaded seats(meaning the manual seat adjustment rather than electric type).

i had the system reset, but the light came back on. to top things off, my roof motor has also just decided to pack in, and im horryfied to see that i have to the roof off of the car. FML

i love the car, its a pleasure to drive/race. but list of electrical problems ive experience with it, makes me look forward to fixing it up and selling it. Ive already bought a 1 series to replace it, thinking a 'sensible' car will be better, and its just as tempremental and expensive to sort out.

to be honest, i cant see me ever buying a BMw again. not worth the hassle.

Hi all,

My airbag light repeatedly came on. When checked it came up with a drivers side buckle fault. I eventually found the culprit. The 2 wires that connect to the buckle (belt pre-tensioner system) under the seat were trapped by the seat being in its lowest position (i'm quite tall), the wires were being pulled through the motion of the car and the electrical connector/plugs changing electrical resistance (due to the effective change in length when pulled) was causing the system to register a general fault. All I had to do was lift the seat up and route these cables out of the way and hold in place with a small cable tie, reset seat, reset the light - problem solved!

I hope this may help someone else. :)

Good luck.

My air bag light came on 2 days ago. It's permanently on I can't afford to have it looked at the moment as just had window regulator go. I just had snapped coil spring replaced plus all the break lines. My zed is a 54 plate 2.5. Is the airbag warning light a common issue then?

Regards

Tom

Umm, my air bag light is on too. Bought the car privately a couple of weeks ago and the guy i bought it off said everything had been checked out by his local garage and the garage put it down to condensation. Reading this thread has now got me rather concerned as, of course it's never that simple.
It's already been to my local garage for a replacement expansion tank also!..... :(

Joined the airbag warning light club
Happened when spilt a drink on the passenger side
I have found this reset tool
http://www.bavariandominator.co.uk/pages/BMW_SRS_Airbag_Light_Reset_Tool_94_03_B800_For_E36_E46_Z3_Z4_E34_E38_E39_E53_X5_E65_149763-z=443303&p=33672.cfm
Has anyone used it?
I have read through the 11 pages and quite a few people have positive reviews to the black box that tricks the sensor

Same problem with me on a 2004 2.2l Roadster. Diagnostic check with an independant BMW specialist shows passenger side belt tensioner (part 72 11 9 119 539) to be faulty, cost to replace is £102.18 plus £27.50 + VAT. Not yet fixed but intend to soon.

I'll add myself to this list - still can't get the problem resolved :-(

I had an undervoltage error and the left satellite computer died, seemingly at the same time. Managed to get a replacement from fleabay but the garage now inform me that used modules can't be recoded to the car's VIN, so it's going to have to be a brand new one from BMW. Can anyone tell me if this is definitely the case or if there's any way around it? If not that's £80 down the drain :-( Also, will the wrong VIN number be the reason the light is still on? It's the only stored fault code I can find, but on INPA it says "Error would not cause a warning lamp to light up" but the light stays on when I clear the codes from the instrument cluster. Weirdly if I run the "clear EM and pre-drive check" function on the main safety module with the car running then the checks all run and the light stays off until the next restart of the car.

Before you start tearing the car to pieces ..... Its worth plugging into it to find out why the airbag light came on.
There are lots f faults that cause an airbag warning light.

Mine came on and I freaked at all the horror stories about BMW charges to fix it ..... I naturally assumed that the airbag warning light meant I had an airbag problem.

Bought plug in thingy ...... Airbag light was on because of a detected low voltage ..... like I would have figured that out. New battery, re-set the fault, sorted.
Next time it came on ........ It was a battery safety terminal error ......
Did some research, twisted and janked the positive battery cable a few times .... Reset the fault ..... Sorted.

I was getting ready to swap seat sensors and everything .......

It pays to plug it in.

Agree with teamemmenracing.

Mine came on a couple of weeks ago after I jump started it when battery had gone flat.

Bought one of the OBD cables and software. Found a few relevant faults but all marked as no longer a problem. Cleared them all and it seems OK - touch wood.

I had the same issue. BMW tech determined that there was a low voltage issue as well. He cleaned the connector (2 wire) that is to the left of my battery in the battery well (2004 Z4) and it went away and stayed away. Dirty connections can cause a host of issues......as do weak batteries and battery connections.
