Airbag light code fault any idea how to fix? E85 2.5si 2007 model. When I clear the fault it turns off and stays off until I turn the steering wheel to the left. It stays off if I turn the steering wheel to the right. Guessing some connection being pulled ??

If it’s 100% linked to the steering wheel I’d say a new clock spring mech is needed

Not expensive and fairly easy to do

If it was me I’d stick the code/bmw z4 into google and see what the majority of results says

So took the airbag off of the steering wheel in case it was a bad connection. When I reconnected the battery the horn is constantly on and the brake light switch isn’t working! Maybe I should stick to my day job :)

I removed fuse 14 to stop the horn but realised it does the brake lights as well so they are now working again! So a faulty clock spring can cause the horn to stay on? I guess when I removed the airbag unit on the front of the steering wheel may have caused that??

It seems logical to me that as all electrics linked to horn and airbag go through the slip ring on those contacts at the top that they are related

Can you get the wheel off and the clock spring mech off to at least give it a clean? See if that makes a difference?

No coding at all

The only differences from memory are that most are like yours connector wise, a small amount have pins in the left hand socket

Did you remove the bolt from the red circled area?

Also the 3 blue arrows point to where there is a spring. The metal plate should move up and down about 2-3mm at these points and should remain up when not being pressed. This is how the horn works.

Think the clock spring is the cause there is a retaining clip that has snapped (see photo) so will order a new one and keep fingers crossed this is the cause.

Yes I took the whole thing off and the horn stayed on!

So are all of the 3 springs still in place? I feel that the plate has not been put back on properly and that is why the horn is now on.

To get to the slip ring, where I think Bigwinn is on the money, you need to remove the nut in the centre of the wheel. You can then remove the complete steering wheel.

I can pop one in the post if you get desperate

I'd say you do need a new slip ring. The piece you are holding stops the slip ring moving when the steering wheel is removed. If the slip ring moves when the steering wheel is not there and the steering wheel is re-fitted with the slip ring in a different position it can then break the slip ring connections.
