Airbag light. Assistance appreciated

My airbag light came on this week when I started the car. I took it to a friend of mine who has a garage and he connected it to the diagnostic tool. The problem is there is no faults showing on the equipment and yet it will not reset. Tried battery disconnect but to no avail.
Any suggestions why there is no fault showing would be appreciated.
I take it there is no way of switching off the passenger airbag?
Thanks for reading

There's a thread above yours detailing the problems with this. Looks like replacing the air bag control unit sorts it.

The airbag light is a rather common yet difficult issue to diagnose if the diagnostic tool doesn't give an error code . The problem could be a number of things. I have the same issue, and some people have sorted theirs by replacing the occupancy sensor mat, some by replacing the control unit etc. It seems even BMW struggle to fix this issue. When I spoke to BMW about it they wanted to charge me something like £130 just to diagnose the error, they then said they would try and reset it but they don't guarantee it and so I could drive down the road, it could come on again, and they would then want another £130 to diagnose it again. They also said sometimes they get an error code, sometimes they don't. Needless to say I did not take the car to them. My recommendation is try other diagnostic tools with other software as I believe they all work slightly differently and some diagnose errors that others don't.

Sorry I couldn't offer a straight forward fix.

If you do a search on the Forum you will find numerous discussions around this issue, maybe you will find some other useful tips....let us know if you do!

I had a similar issue with an unexplained airbag light on an AUDI S4 once. Ultimately the only fix was to replace the airbag control module. Both annoying and expensive.

if it is the main module it will require coding which unless u are willing to spend hours learning would require a trip to the dealer. most expensive part of the system to fail as well  i would double check that it isnt something like the seatbelt tensioners as these failing will only state that the airbag light is activated in a generic search with INPA

I bought a OBD to USB port from eBay which came with the full BMW Ediabas INPA, DIS, SS and TIS software and full install instructions on how to get it all running on your pc. I originally bought it to diagnose the airbag light on my 330d ( was the occupancy seat matt at fault) but works a treat on my Z4mc too.

eBay seller was bmwcables-co-uk

I recall it being less than 30 quid, great investment.

Was it THIS ONE and can you reset the airbag light with it as suggested?
