Air Vents and the F word

OK, I have spent 3 hours using a variety of tools to try to remove my air vents. No joy.

So, I resorted to my extra special toolkit of the "F" word as noun, verb, adjective, adverb & pronoun in a single sentence.

Still no joy. So, using the "F" word as noun, verb, adjective, adverb & pronoun in combination with the "C" and "B" word, and "F'ing C".....still not good enough.

Have now poured petrol onto the Zed and set fire to the MOFA in a fit of temper.

Havent had mine out - so cant comment on how to remove them - but your post certainly made me chuckle.

it is a twat to dime- scared of breaking/scratching anything!! this video is useful but i didnt use anything at the top like he di as this seemed to start to damage the vent- also need more force than he seems to use.

good luck!

Honestly, just look for those two clips and use a credit card on the side to pull it out by a couple of MM so you can use your fingers to pull out the rest.

Also "close" the vents first.

I have taken 4 of these out now in different Zs, and each of them required a different amount of pressure to get the vent out.

It is the foam that makes it stick in place, nothing else (well - except for the bracket of course).

as pvr has said it isnt difficult but the right tools help, a credit card or dinner knife i would suggest are the best tools as they are flat and give more room to move between the vent gaps.

Given up for now. When I get agitated, the Parkinsons tremor kicks in big time and it doesn't do to have sharp implements in my left hand, i.e screwdriver waving about poking holes in seats, eyes, folding roof etc. May try again another day when the pain of abject failure has subsided and I can be trusted to handle sharps again. B****cks, A*se and T*t w**k to the iPod!

It's not the first time I've launched a tool over the wall at the bottom of my parents garden when I was younger. Usually after the allen key slips when I was tightening chinring bolts, resulting in a knuckles-say-hello-to-sharp-pointy-chainring moment.

So yes, I can sympathise with you

Annoying thing is its so simple once you know how, ive had mine in and out loads recently while upgrading my audio.

In fact I have somehow bollixed the slats in the vent. The internal vertical fins will not move when you use the left/right sliders. They seem to have come adrift somehow. So, I am really gonna set fire to the mutha! Left hand is GREAT at striking swann vestas!

You can click the slats back in, no problem. If you have ruined it - I have a spare one here you can have (the result of someone else trying to remove it and slightly damaged the outside).

Cheers PVR, I'll have a bash when in right frame of mind. As a matter of interest, whenever I thought I had some movement from the vent, it seems it was just the facia panel pulling off, not the whole unit coming out. So, can I just take facia off to make it easier to get to holes?

no, if you remove the facia you have truly buggered it up as it will snap the clips that attaches it to the main unit. Put the (thick) credit card on one side only and lever it whilst pushing the metal clip down. Just work on one side only for a bit until you get that one out by about 5 mm or so (enough to get your fingers around the unit). Never use a screwdriver around the edge as you will damage the plastic (or the dash).

Where abouts are you anyway?

(your writing amused me greatly  )

Yep, tried all that. I even got the local church to pray for success! Maybe God doesn't listen to the good people of Brentwood who live just 1/2 mile off the A12.

I inserted the screwdriver, dinner knife, slim-jim etc through the 1st, 2nd or 3rd slat from top until I felt it stop. Levered upwards to make tip of implement got downwards, or just pushed implement downwards. Inserted credit card into top or side and wiggle-jiggled it or levered until it felt ready to snap. I am in the right place? i.e the square looking hole. You cannot actually see the clip, you just feel for it? I have tried and tried and tried. I managed to install cruise, and built the Hadron Collider from scratch in my spare time. Even my wife says I can hit the right spot on time every time! But that was a piece of p*ss compared to this.

It's one of the most frustrating things in the world, ever.

If you look at that pic posted the page before, it's the best way of working out where to put the pokey thing.

I use a tiny screwdriver now, once you've got the knack it's literally 20seconds to release both sides and pull it out, not complicated just peculiar.

Let's hope they aren't broken as we havent got a How-To for that

Oh Yeah, I too can fully sympathize. Be patient, and gentle. I found it best to have several old credit cards handy so that when you get the slightest opportunity you can jam one in so as not to lose the hard gained gap. Small (jewlers) screw driver to press down on the tabs, but it seems that just this alone will not release the vent. Keep working, and then amazingly one side will pop out, then the other. When you see it out in your hand, you'll wonder why it was so hard... until the next time....

It's one of those annoying tasks that once you've done it for the first time, your sit scratching your head wondering "Why the f*** was that so difficult?!"

your patience is better than mine i think i got to 1.5 hrs.

then thought f'k it. either it comes out whole or broken. rammed a screw driver as far in each little square hole as possible, gave a little jiggle and out it came. :)

As has been said the foam can cause a little resistance.
